Original Avatar Star’s Darkest Episode Revelation

Avatar: The Last Airbender,” a highly cherished and top-tier animated series, has episodes that fans adore, with “Zuko Alone,” “Tales of Ba Sing Se,” and the final episode, “Sozin’s Comet – Part 4,” being particularly noteworthy. However, Mae Whitman, who provided Katara’s voice in the original series, has a favorite episode that stands out, and it’s one of the darkest episodes in the show. At an Avatar: The Last Airbender panel at MegaCon Orlando (as reported by CBR), Whitman was asked about which episode had the most significant impact on her and Katara. Although Katara experiences a lot throughout The Last Airbender’s three seasons, it is during Season 3 that she tragically learns one of the darkest waterbending abilities: bloodbending.

In a difficult situation, Katara learned a method to overcome her adversary, which she instantly regretted, swearing never to use waterbending with blood in it again. This incident marked a significant turning point for Katara, reinforcing her role as the series’ symbol of hope and positivity alongside innocent Aang, self-centered Sokka, and playful Toph. Whitman discusses the impact this episode had on Katara after its creation, and the messages it conveys among other episodes in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Mae Whitman Discusses “The Puppetmaster” Episode

In a chat about “Avatar: The Last Airbender” Season 3, Episode 8, known as “The Puppetmaster,” actress Mae Whitman commented on the unexpectedly somber mood that characterized this standout episode.

Whitman remarked, “The bloodbending episode stood out for me because it explored the intricacies of manipulating individuals and circumstances. I recall being a child and feeling deeply impacted by that, as well as its somber undertones.” Without a doubt, the darkest and most unsettling episode in the series is Season 3’s “The Puppetmaster.

In the latest episode, Team Avatar encountered Hama, an ancient waterbender who had previously been held captive by the Fire Nation. While in prison, she mastered the forbidden art of bloodbending, employing this skill against both her fellow prisoners and our heroes.

Could Netflix’s Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender Feature Bloodbending?

In my observation, Netflix’s live-action rendition of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” didn’t quite reach the blockbuster status that Netflix had anticipated. However, it did garner a dedicated fanbase, leading Netflix to ensure a fitting conclusion, wrapping up the live-action series with its upcoming two seasons. Compared to the original series, Netflix’s “The Last Airbender” has trimmed certain elements from the first season to accommodate a more concise episode structure. Thus, the question arises: will bloodbending be a part of the live-action series, or will it get edited out?

Including bloodbending in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series seems logical given its darker tone and older target audience compared to the original animated series. The eerie allure of bloodbending aligns well with the ominous atmosphere set in Season 1 of the live-action adaptation. Furthermore, a live-action fight involving bloodbending would undeniably be visually stunning. If bloodbending appears in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, it is likely to be introduced in the third and final season. This is because it is an extremely powerful ability used only in critical situations by Katara; presenting it too early might diminish the importance of other fight scenes.

As of now, there’s no confirmed premiere date for Season 2 of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, but fans speculate it might come out in 2026 since the series has already begun filming for its second season.
