One of Marvel’s initial Avengers cast members contends that “Avengers: Endgame” deserved an Oscar nomination. While it’s uncommon for superhero films to be considered for awards, let alone to actually win, the massive success of “Avengers: Endgame” at the box office didn’t sway the Oscars to recognize it in any category. Scarlett Johansson, who portrayed Black Widow in the Marvel Universe, feels this omission was a miss. She openly expresses her thoughts on the Academy overlooking “Avengers: Endgame.” While she doesn’t advocate for the movie to secure an award, she does argue that it deserved at least a nomination.
Scarlett Johansson expressed her surprise during an interview with Vanity Fair, questioning why this film wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. She found it astonishing because it was a challenging movie that defied odds by successfully working as a film, and to add to that, it ranks among the most successful films ever made.
To simply label Avengers: Endgame as a successful film is doing it an injustice, for it surpassed Avatar to claim the title of the highest-grossing movie ever made. This blockbuster marked the conclusion of what’s known as the Infinity Saga, a narrative arc that started with 2008’s Iron Man and spanned across three phases and over 20 films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). What sets Avengers: Endgame apart is that two key members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Iron Man and Black Widow, made the ultimate sacrifice to thwart Thanos.
A film titled “Black Widow” hit theaters post-“Avengers: Endgame”, offering an origin backstory for Scarlett Johansson’s character. Fans have wondered if they might see Black Widow once more, given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now in its Multiverse Storyline. There are whispers that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as the antagonist Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Additionally, there’s talk that Chris Evans might make a comeback in “Avengers: Doomsday”.
Contrary to speculation, Scarlett Johansson remains resolute in her conviction that any future appearance as Black Widow would undermine the impact of her character’s death in Avengers: Endgame.
Johansson expressed difficulty in comprehending how a return could fit for the character she portrays, stating, ‘I yearn to be with my friends forever, but the charm of the character lies in her story being concluded. I don’t wish to alter that, and it’s crucial for the fans as well.’
In March, during an interview with InStyle for its Spring Fashion & Beauty issue, Johansson expressed similar sentiments: “Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) is deceased,” she stated firmly. “The fans find it hard to accept. They keep saying ‘But she might return!’ However, I believe the fate of the universe rests in her hands, and we must move on. She saved the world; let’s give her a hero’s moment.
Among all Marvel films, it’s only “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” that has been recognized with an Oscar nomination. Notably, Angela Bassett was nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actress. Additionally, the film received nods for Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, and Best Visual Effects.
Reflecting on the triumph of “Avengers: Endgame,” it’s not hard to see why Scarlett Johansson felt it deserved an Oscar nod. Just as “Avatar” won three Oscars and was hailed as a sensation in Hollywood due to its innovative 3D technology, “Avengers: Endgame” had a similar impact on the superhero genre. Marvel Studios masterfully demonstrated how to create and execute a shared cinematic universe, with “Avengers: Endgame” serving as the pinnacle of this accomplishment. This outstanding achievement alone seems worthy of an Oscar nomination.
