In a light-hearted conversation, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the writer-director behind “I Know What You Did Last Summer“, shares an amusing tale about how one of the original film’s stars declined participation in the reboot. The renowned slasher series is returning with a new chapter, albeit not a complete remake. The title might be the same as the 1997 movie, but it deviates from a full reboot. In essence, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” continues within the same cinematic universe as the initial two movies, featuring cameos by Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. However, this new installment also introduces a vibrant, young cast to continue the legacy of unintentionally killing someone, concealing the act, and subsequently being haunted by an enigmatic fisherman.
Today saw the release of the official trailer for ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, and Entertainment Weekly managed to interview Robinson to uncover more about the movie. Although Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are returning, Robinson put in a lot of effort trying to persuade Sarah Michelle Gellar too, as her character, Helen Shivers, is deceased.
Robinson humorously stated, “I really made an attempt, you understand! I teased her relentlessly. But sadly, she’s no longer with us.” He added, “I even suggested some outrageous ideas. I proposed, ‘What if you weren’t truly dead but hiding instead?’ Sarah responded, ‘I was as good as frozen. I was the most deceased a person could be.’ I persisted, ‘But imagine if…’ She retorted, ‘I am Sarah Michelle Gellar, the deceased.’
In the trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, we observe Elsa and Helen Shivers’ tombstones, accompanied by a picture of Sarah Michelle Gellar near Helen’s. The movie concludes with Chase Sui Wonders approaching Jennifer Love Hewitt on what appears to be a college setting, inquiring about her assistance. “I only have one query,” Hewitt responds. “What was it that you did the previous summer?
As a diehard movie enthusiast, I must confess that a heavy dose of apprehension gripped me for two full days leading up to [filming]. The questions swirling in my mind were, “Can I pull this off? Am I ready for this challenge?” It’s not an easy burden to carry. But when the first glimpses from ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ were unveiled by PEOPLE, I found myself feeling quite jittery, especially at 46, revisiting a role I originated at 18. However, the incredibly talented young cast members made the transition smoother, taking some of the edge off my nerves.
She put it simply: “They can make it their own, while I cheer them on like a proud parent, saying, ‘Here you go, take it and run with it, enjoy!'” On her reunion with Prinze, Hewitt described it as feeling like a high school reunion, filled with the excitement of seeing an old friend after many years apart. She said, “It was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I have butterflies in my stomach and my heart is racing because I haven’t seen this person in 150 years, but here we are again.’ When we started working together, it felt like we had never stopped, honestly.
As a seasoned movie critic, I’m thrilled to share my insights about “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a chilling production directed by the talented Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. This suspenseful tale brings together a stellar cast including Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr. Mark your calendars for July 18th to catch this thrilling movie on the big screen!
