Original Narnia Movies Producer Is Confused by Greta Gerwig Reboot (& So Are We)

The timeless tales of Narnia are set to return to cinemas under the direction of Greta Gerwig (Barbie), yet details concerning which part of the series this new adaptation will encompass remain unclear. According to recent reports, Gerwig may not be adapting “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” as previously thought, but rather a different book, implying that this upcoming film could potentially serve as a prequel. In a recent interview with Deadline, original producer of the Chronicles of Narnia trilogy, Mark Johnson, expressed similar curiosity about the nature and source material of the forthcoming reboot.

When inquired about the upcoming remake, Johnson expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m really intrigued. To begin with, I’m a huge admirer of hers, so I can hardly wait to see her work. I’m not quite sure what she’s planning. Is it The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which we made years ago, or is it something new? Or is it a blend of both?

Regardless of how this fresh take shapes up, Johnson is eagerly anticipating it and has no feelings of rivalry about being part of the same narrative world. “I’m not privy to all the details, but I’m not competitive about it,” Johnson expressed. “I can hardly wait to see it because whatever [Gerwig] creates will undoubtedly be excellent, and I’m confident that it will be strikingly different from what we previously did.

Disney brought to life a trilogy based on C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, starting with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, followed by Prince Caspian, and concluding with The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Andrew Adamson directed the first two movies, while Michael Apted took charge for The Dawn Treader. Now, Greta Gerwig is set to lead this new adaptation, with rumors suggesting she will adapt The Magician’s Nephew, a book that comes sixth in the series but chronicles events before the first book. Other books in the franchise include The Horse and His Boy, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle.

In The Magician’s Nephew, readers are introduced to two characters, Digory and Polly, who reside in London. Through the manipulations of Digory’s Uncle Andrew and his magical dabblings, they find themselves transported to the enchanting realm of Narnia. Upon arrival, they encounter a myriad of novel characters within this extraordinary world. However, they also cross paths with the malevolent sorceress named Jadis, who aims to seize them. But her plans are thwarted when she encounters Aslan the lion, thus establishing the foundations for events depicted in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Unlike previous Narnia adaptations that were full theatrical releases, this new one is a Netflix production and won’t be shown in cinemas nationwide. However, for a brief period of two weeks before its release date on Netflix, you will have an opportunity to watch it on IMAX screens. So, make sure to catch it on the big screen within that limited time frame.
