As a long-time fan of the “Practical Magic” films and books, I can’t contain my excitement over the announcement that a sequel is in the works with the original stars, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, set to return. The thought of seeing Gillian and Sally back on screen, facing new challenges and adventures, is truly magical for me.
The upcoming “Practical Magic” sequel is set to introduce another ability from the initial movie, Collider reports. Akiva Goldsman, who previously collaborated on the script for the 1998 original, is penning the sequel’s screenplay. Notably, this makes him the latest cast member from the first film to join the project. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman have already been confirmed to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters. At present, a director for the sequel has yet to be selected.
In the upcoming sequel, Goldsman will continue the tale of the Owens sisters, drawing influence from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 book, “The Book of Magic.” Notably, this is the fourth novel in the “Practical Magic” series, but it stands alone as the only direct continuation of the initial “Practical Magic” book. The other two novels, “The Rules of Magic” (2017) and “Magic Lessons” (2020), are prequels to the story.
“According to Di Novi’s earlier statement, the project is planned for completion in the year 2025. However, an exact date is yet to be determined. At present, we are initiating the scriptwriting process, with Akiva Goldsman, who has been involved in numerous projects since the original and is now writing the script, leading the way.”
Original Stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock Are Returning
After it was revealed that a sequel to “Practical Magic” was being produced, Kidman subsequently confirmed her involvement along with Bullock. When this news broke, Kidman, who portrays Gillian Owens in the initial film, shared her plans to rejoin the project.

Kidman confirmed, “Yes, I and Sandy will be part of it. There’s plenty more to share, making us excited to dive deeper into the project.” (Or) “Kidman agreed, “Both I and Sandy are involved. The intrigue lies in uncovering the full story, which we are eager to explore further.”
What is Practical Magic About?
According to the 1995 novel “Practical Magic” by Hoffman, the movie adaptation was released in 1998 and tells the story of sisters Gillian and Sally. After their parents died tragically, they were brought up by their aunts. Unfortunately, the women are descendants of a long lineage of witches, and due to an ancient spell, any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to an untimely death.
For years, supporters of the movie “Practical Magic” have been longing for a sequel. Beyond the novels, there were plans to revive the series on television. In 2004, a reboot pilot was filmed for CBS, and in 2010, a prequel show started development for ABC Family. Regrettably, neither project managed to materialize. A new prequel attempt emerged at Max in 2019, but it too failed to take off.
