Original Resident Evil 3 Being Re-Released This Week

As a seasoned gamer with memories of gaming consoles older than some of today’s teenagers, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia at the news that Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is finally making its way to PC via GOG on September 25th. This game was a staple in my gaming diet back in the day, and while I’ve since upgraded to more modern horror experiences, nothing quite compares to the terror of evading Nemesis through the streets of Raccoon City.

The modern-day remake of Resident Evil 3 is available across a multitude of contemporary gaming platforms, but the version initially released in 1999 has been less accessible. To address this, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is set to arrive on PC via GOG on September 25th, Wednesday. The game will retail for $9.99 individually, or as part of a $24.99 package that includes the first two games in the series. For those who missed out on the original Resident Evil trilogy, this upcoming release provides an ideal chance to immerse themselves in the origins of the franchise.

If you’ve never experienced the thrill of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, this game lets you step into the shoes of Jill Valentine, who was introduced earlier in the original Resident Evil. This title is where we were first introduced to Nemesis, one of the most iconic villains from the Resident Evil universe. Contrary to its numbering, the story actually begins before the events of Resident Evil 2, but as time progresses, the two games start to overlap. While Resident Evil 3 might not be as highly regarded as some other installments in the series, it still offers a lot of enjoyable elements, especially for fans who enjoyed the first two games.

Regrettably, Capcom hasn’t given us any updates yet on whether the Resident Evil series might eventually come to consoles as well. Over the past few years, Capcom has been making it easier for us to get their older games by releasing various compilations. We’ve seen this with Mega Man, Phoenix Wright, and even their fighting games. However, for some unknown reason, the original Resident Evil games haven’t received the same treatment, despite many fan requests.

Back in June, I got word that the first three Resident Evil games will be making their way to GOG. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill releases; they’re based on the Windows 95 versions, which sets them apart from those released on PlayStation, Dreamcast, and N64. It looks like GOG might have played a hand in porting these classics, but if that’s true, it could mean that these games will only be available on their platform for a limited time, or perhaps they won’t be released anywhere else at all. Here’s hoping that’s not the case!
