Orlando Bloom on Potential New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie With Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp

Orlando Bloom has spent his days living as a pirate, having portrayed the dashing blacksmith Will Turner in four Pirates of the Caribbean films from 2003 to 2017, last appearing alongside Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp in Dead Men Tell No Tales. A scene after the credits hinted at a future confrontation between Will, Elizabeth (Knightley), Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) and the former captain of the Flying Dutchman, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), in Pirates of the Caribbean 6; however, the pirate tale has been stranded since then.

When queried about the progress of a fresh film set in Britain, Bloom replied, “There have been various possibilities,” he said. “As for certainty? There’s been some chatter [about a sixth installment]. At this point, though, I’m unable to disclose anything as I truly don’t know.

The Deep Cover actor expressed his thoughts, saying, “It seems they’re figuring out how everything might appear.” He further stated, “I, for one, find the idea of reuniting the band intriguing. I believe that would be fantastic. However, there are always varying opinions, so we’ll have to wait and see where it ends up.

Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind the Pirates of the Caribbean series, has shared that Disney is working on two distinct Pirates movies: a fresh take written by Jeff Nathanson, who previously worked on films like The Lion King and Dead Men Tell No Tales, and a spinoff centering around a female lead, potentially starring Margot Robbie from Birds of Prey. This new project has Christina Hodson, the writer behind Birds of Prey, attached to it.

Following the movie “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which focused on Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), the son of Will and Elizabeth, and Captain Barbossa’s daughter Carina (Kaya Scodelario), the producer hinted that a sixth Pirates movie could potentially serve as a reboot. He explained this to ComicBook, stating that it would be simpler to produce because there’s no need to wait for specific actors to be available.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve always been eager for the Pirates gang to set sail again. However, during his defamation trial against Amber Heard in 2022, Johnny Depp revealed that Disney severed ties with him and removed him from Pirates 6 due to allegations of abuse Heard had made in a 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post. Fortunately, Depp emerged victorious in the defamation lawsuit. Bruckheimer hinted at a reboot in 2024, but if I were to have my way, Depp’s iconic character Jack Sparrow would still be on board.

In November, Knightley, who portrayed Bloom’s romantic interest and later wife in four out of five Pirates movies, announced her retirement from franchise films. She explained that accepting roles overseas would be inconvenient for her children.

It’s an intriguing situation when something both torments and empowers you, and that’s what happened with the Pirates films for me. I faced criticism because of them, yet their success granted me opportunities to work on movies like Pride & Prejudice and The Imitation Game, which earned me Oscar nominations. These films were my most successful projects, but they also subjected me to public scrutiny. So they occupy a puzzling spot in my mind.

In the movie “Dead Men Tell No Tales”, Knightley briefly reappeared without any dialogue, following the liberation of Bloom’s character from the curse that tied him to the ghost ship called the Dutchman. Recently, Bloom shared his thoughts about Knightley’s experience working on the Pirates films with Entertainment Weekly, saying, “It was such a significant period in history that seems almost like another era now. But it was truly unique and I’m always thankful. However, I can relate to Keira’s feelings, and she does fantastic work…. I have many fond memories from that time.
