As a die-hard fan of the original Orphan Black series, I must say that the spinoff, Echoes, has not only met but surpassed my expectations. The way it seamlessly blends old and new elements while maintaining the show’s signature intrigue is nothing short of brilliant.
We’re approaching the finale of the debut season of Orphan Black: Echoes, the latest spinoff from the cherished BBC America series Orphan Black. The show has effectively woven in elements of the original series’ grand themes and enigmas, while also incorporating details from the source material. Following Felix Dawkins’ (Jordan Gavaris) return earlier this season, another fan-favorite character from Orphan Black has resurfaced – one who shares a significant past connection with adult Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes).
In a recent interview with TVInsider, showrunner Anna Fisko explained, “It was incredibly heartwarming.” She added, “Delphine, being an older, wiser woman who’s been through it all, can listen to Kira’s actions without judgment, offer support even when Kira feels she’s done something wrong, and still show love. This felt deeply significant to Kira, especially during a time when she was harshly judging herself.”
What Is Orphan Black: Echoes About?
Orphan Black: Echoes revolves around a collection of women, who intertwine their paths and embark on an exciting adventure to decipher the secret behind their identities and reveal a heart-wrenching tale of love and deceit. Ritter takes on the role of Lucy, a woman with an extraordinary backstory, searching for her belonging in life. Anna Fishko assumes the responsibilities as showrunner and writer of Orphan Black: Echoes, while John Fawcett, one of the series co-creators, returns as executive producer and director. Alongside Ritter, the cast includes Keeley Hawes, Amanda Fix, Rya Kihlstedt, and Avon Jogia.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Kihlstedt expressed that as the series progresses, particularly episodes 5 and 6, the clone element becomes increasingly prominent. By the end, viewers discover there are actually three versions of the character Eleanor, with a fourth unaccounted for. This revelation adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, Kihlstedt believes, as it explores the idea of shared characteristics and connections between individuals, even those who have never met or crossed paths. The clone aspect, in Kihlstedt’s view, captures something unique about our world, suggesting that there could be someone out there, possibly unknown to us, who shares our physical traits and genetic makeup, living somewhere in our vast and interconnected world. This idea of hidden similarities and connections, even across great distances, is what makes the clone element so fascinating to Kihlstedt.
New episodes of Orphan Black: Echoes air Sundays at 10/9c on AMC, BBC America, and AMC+.
