Oscar Isaac, who’s gained a significant following from his roles in Marvel’s Moon Knight and Star Wars’ Poe Dameron, is stepping into a legendary horror film character – Dr. Victor Frankenstein. This transformation will be showcased in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming remake, set to debut on Netflix in November. A sneak peek of Isaac as Frankenstein was unveiled during Netflix’s 2025 slate preview, which you can see above!
In Guillermo del Toro’s new take on Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi (known for Euphoria and Saltburn) will portray the monster created by Victor, with Mia Goth (Maxxxine, Pearl), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards), Ralph Ineson (Fantastic Four: First Steps), David Bradley (Harry Potter and Game of Thrones), Christian Convery (Netflix’s Sweet Tooth) and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) also joining the cast.
Previously, del Toro expressed his aspiration to create a “Miltonian tragedy” version of Frankenstein, and the visuals in the provided image seem to reflect this ongoing intention. Del Toro was once invited to contribute to Universal’s “Dark Universe” series, a potential rival to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or DC Extended Universe in the 2010s. However, he declined due to his commitments to directing a second Hellboy film (The Golden Army) and preparing for The Hobbit, where he would eventually hand over the director’s role to his friend Peter Jackson, while still contributing to the scripts. Afterward, del Toro moved away from blockbuster franchise filmmaking, focusing more on personal horror-drama projects like Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water, which won four Oscars in 2018. Unfortunately for Universal, their ambitions for the Dark Universe franchise were dashed with flops such as Dracula Untold (2014) and Tom Cruise’s The Mummy (2017).
Fan speculation suggests that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro might be creating his own movie monster realm, aiming to compete with Universal’s revamped franchise. Considering the misstep Universal (alongside Blumhouse) experienced with their Wolf Man remake – a critical flop at the box office in January – it seems like 2025 could be an opportune moment for del Toro, who is openly expressing his enthusiasm for Frankenstein, a project he holds close to his heart.
For half a century, ‘Frankenstein’ has been constantly on my mind from childhood, and for about 20 to 25 years, I’ve been working tirelessly on bringing it to life. Some people might even say I have an unusual passion for it, but they wouldn’t be far off the mark. In truth, this character has seeped into my very essence, forming a connection so deep that it feels like a part of me. This project is deeply personal, and I can hardly wait to share a glimpse of ‘Frankenstein’ with you.
J. Miles Dale, who often collaborates with Guillermo del Toro, noted that they both lost their fathers within the last ten years. Del Toro’s upcoming film, “Frankenstein,” will conclude a trilogy of movies he has directed, focusing on the theme of father-son relationships.
In recent movies such as “Nightmare Alley” and “Pinocchio”, we’ve delved into the complexities of the father-son bond. Interestingly, both Guillermo del Toro and I have recently lost our fathers. A significant influence in our lives is a powerful father figure, as Dale shared with The Academy. This adaptation of “Frankenstein” follows suit, continuing what seems to be Guillermo’s thematic exploration of the father-son relationship. Intriguingly, it appears that this film could be the third installment in Guillermo’s ‘father trilogy’. Reading the script evokes strong emotions and, as you might expect, is quite iconic.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is set to release on Netflix sometime in November.
