Oscar Isaac confessed that he was taken aback when filmmaker Guillermo del Toro proposed him for a principal character in his rendition of Mary Shelley’s novel. Isaac portrays the role of the eccentric scientist, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, in the upcoming film.
During its Tudum event on Saturday (May 31), Netflix revealed a sneak peek of Guillermo del Toro’s modern take on the classic story “Frankenstein.” Set in 19th-century Europe, this adaptation follows Dr. Pretorious (Christoph Waltz) as he hunts for Frankenstein’s Monster (Jacob Elordi), believed to have perished 40 years ago. Del Toro shared insights about the project with reporters on the Tudum red carpet, expressing surprise at his own role as Victor Frankenstein in this reimagining.
Oscar Isaac Says He ‘Wasn’t Expecting’ To Star in Frankenstein
He didn’t anticipate it, but as he reminisced, he remembered that during a lengthy chat with Guillermo del Toro, the director suddenly looked at him and proposed, “I think you should be my Victor Frankenstein.” To this day, he finds it hard to believe.
In a continuation of his speech, the actor expressed: “[Del Toro] promised to create a feast for me as an actor, and true to his word, he did. Every day on set, I found myself eager and performing intricate, expressive acts. He was like a supportive brother to me throughout the process.

As a fortunate cast member, I can’t help but share my excitement about the film we’re working on. It’s nothing short of epic, a scale I’ve never encountered before in my acting career. Yet, it’s not just grandeur that makes this production stand out. There’s an emotional depth and personal touch that resonates deeply.
This movie holds a special place in Guillermo’s heart, as it has been part of his life since childhood. I believe the audience might be pleasantly taken aback by the sheer amount of heart this film carries.
Isaac provided insights into Elordi’s feelings towards Frankenstein’s monster, expressing that it was deeply moving to witness him fully transformed into the infamous beast.
“I just was so excited and was doing all sorts of beautiful, difficult, expressive things.”
Goth maintained that the lengthy stint in the makeup chair made the job challenging for him, yet he found it rewarding as the final makeup result was truly remarkable.
Guillermo del Toro has been attempting to bring a “Frankenstein” movie to life for close to two decades now. His enthusiasm for adapting Shelley’s chilling tale was first revealed back in 2007, and he began working on the project the year after that. However, the WGA writers’ strike caused the project to be temporarily halted.
The three-time Academy Award winner encountered multiple pauses and resumptions while working on ‘Frankenstein’, as he dedicated time to various other projects. However, it wasn’t until 2023 that he signed a contract with Netflix to produce the movie. Interestingly, despite ‘Frankenstein’ being rooted in classical Gothic folklore, Guillermo del Toro has consistently maintained that his interpretation of the story will be unique.
As a film enthusiast, someone recently inquired about the scary elements in the film, and for the first time, it struck me as an important question. This story holds deep emotions for me; it’s incredibly personal. It’s essentially a reflection of my thoughts on being a father, a son – themes that resonate with me deeply. Rest assured, I’m not making a horror movie. I don’t intend to create such experiences in the future.
