Oscar Winners You Never Knew Played Superheroes!

It’s common knowledge that Robert Downey Jr. was awarded a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in “Oppenheimer” (2023), and we might recall Ben Kingsley winning Best Actor for playing Gandhi (1982), as well as Ben Affleck receiving the Best Director award for “Argo”. Many people are familiar with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Best Actress win in 1999 for “Shakespeare in Love”, although the film is often remembered for controversially winning Best Picture over “Saving Private Ryan”, which some consider to be the superior movie of that year.

However, have you noticed that some Marvel or DC actors who’ve won Oscars appear to have their award-winning performances overshadowed by their roles in comic book films? Whether they portrayed a superhero or a villain, these talented individuals received the prestigious Oscar, with some winning quite recently. Yet, their Oscar wins often seem like a minor aspect of their career, especially when compared to their blockbuster superhero roles.

Brie Larson for Room (2015)

Two years following her role in “Short Term 12,” which didn’t result in a nomination, Brie Larson, famously known for playing Captain Marvel, was awarded for her equally remarkable performance in Lenny Abrahamson’s film “Room.” Based on the 2010 novel of the same title, Larson portrays Joy “Ma” Newsome, a woman who, with her son Jack (Jacob Tremblay), has been held captive underground for seven years. The success of this movie hinges heavily on the quality of its lead performances and the rapport between them, and both Larson and Tremblay excel in these respects. Interestingly, Larson’s addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was confirmed at Marvel Studios’ 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, a mere five months after her victory.

Nicolas Cage for Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

Actor Nicholas Cage, known for playing Ghost Rider and Spider-Man Noir, has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Actor. The first was for the film “Leaving Las Vegas” in 1995, where he played an alcoholic with a death wish who moves to Vegas intending to drink himself to death. This heartbreaking story is based on real events. He won the award five years before appearing as Ghost Rider in 2007. His other nomination was for the 2002 film “Adaptation”. Both performances are outstanding and significant in his career, but they are quite distinct from each other.

Rachel Weisz for The Constant Gardener (2005)

According to John le Carré’s renowned novel “The Constant Gardener”, the film adaptation received four Academy Award nominations: Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Weisz. Interestingly, only Weisz won an award, which was well-deserved. However, the term “Supporting” in the award category leaves one wondering who the film’s lead actress actually was. Ralph Fiennes portrays Justin Quayle, a British diplomat stationed in Kenya, while Weisz plays his wife, Tessa, an activist for Amnesty International who is murdered by assassins hired by a pharmaceutical company. Sixteen years after her Oscar win, Weisz went on to play Melina Vostokoff in “Black Widow”, a role she will reprise in the upcoming Marvel’s Thunderbolts.

Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart (2009)

Jeff Bridges, who plays Iron Man’s character, boasts an illustrious and remarkable acting career that spans many decades. It’s no wonder he has garnered significant attention from the Academy Awards throughout his career, often receiving nominations rather than actual wins. Among his numerous roles in films like The Last Picture Show, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, John Carpenter’s Starman, The Contender, Crazy Heart, True Grit, and Hell or High Water, Bridges only won the Oscar for Crazy Heart. If one were to quiz an average moviegoer about which film earned him the award, they would likely guess True Grit due to its more prominent title, over the less publicized country singer drama. Interestingly, Bridges received his Oscar following his role in a superhero film, making him unique among the other actors on this list.

Holly Hunter & Anna Paquin for The Piano (1993)

28 years prior to earning Best Director for “The Power of the Dog,” Jane Campion directed her masterpiece, “The Piano,” which also earned her a Best Director nomination. In this film, Holly Hunter, known for roles in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “The Incredibles,” played Ada McGrath, a mute Scottish woman who traveled with her daughter (Anna Paquin in her debut role) to New Zealand for an arranged marriage. Paquin won the Oscar at just 11 years old, making her the second-youngest actor to do so, a record she still holds today. After this win, Paquin went on to play Rogue in four “X-Men” movies, while Hunter has two “Incredibles” films and “Batman v Superman” in her current filmography.
