Due to the devastating effects of the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, it’s understandable that speculation has arisen about whether this year’s Oscars will be canceled or delayed, as reported by some media outlets.
Originally scheduled for January 17th, the announcement of nominations has been postponed twice. Now, it’s expected to occur a week later on Thursday, January 23rd.
However, it appears that speculations about shifting the ceremony date might be off the mark entirely. Contrary to a report by The Sun, The Hollywood Reporter has decisively denied any such claims, ruling out the suggestion of an outright cancellation as a possible contingency plan.
This year’s Best Picture competition seems likely to be extremely tight, quite different from last year where the eventual winner, Oppenheimer, held a strong and uncontested lead for many months prior to the awards ceremony.
In simpler terms, Brady Corbet’s movie “The Brutalist,” having won the Golden Globe for Best Drama film, is currently favored by experts and betting odds. However, there are other films such as “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez,” and even “Wicked” that are seen as contenders with a good chance of success.
But when is the ceremony actually taking place? Read on for everything you need to know.
When are the Oscars 2025?
The Oscars will happen on March 2nd, 2025, at their usual place, the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, except for 2021 when it was smaller due to the pandemic.)
The three-hour ceremony will begin at 4pm PST – which translates to midnight for UK viewers.
For those eager film enthusiasts on our side of the ocean, be ready for a rather late-night viewing if you wish to catch the awards ceremony as it happens live.
The official nomination announcements for the Academy Awards will be made public on Thursday, January 23rd. The voting process for Academy members will then commence and continue for one week, from Tuesday, February 11th to February 18th.
Who is hosting the Oscars 2025?
Back in November 2024, it was announced that comedian and renowned talk show host Conan O’Brien would be the one to preside over the ceremony this year. This will be his debut as a presenter.
Expressing their excitement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang stated that they were both elated and privileged to have the exceptional O’Brien accepting the role.
They noted: “He is an ideal candidate to spearhead our worldwide film festivities, given his witty humor, passion for cinema, and broadcasting experience on live television.
His exceptional talent for engaging audiences promises to unite viewers, as they gather to celebrate, just like the Oscars always do, the outstanding movies and movie makers of this year’s cinematic scene.
Jimmy Kimmel, who had been hosting the previous two ceremonies, declined the opportunity to host a third consecutive year, marking his fifth overall time. Now, O’Brien steps into the role.
Additionally, as reported by Variety, renowned comedian John Mulaney, known for his humorous performance at the previous event, declined the opportunity to serve as the host this time around.
Once again, the event will feature many prominent figures and past award recipients presenting honors throughout the evening. However, as of now, it’s yet to be determined which notable personalities will grace us with their presence at this occasion.
