Oscars 2025 nominations officially delayed after impact of LA fires

Due to the continuing wildfires in Los Angeles, the announcement of the nominations for the upcoming Oscars has been pushed back by two days and will now take place on Sunday, 19th January instead.

Due to the destructive effect that wildfires have had across large parts of Southern California, causing considerable disruption, the Academy has decided to prolong the voting duration for its members until Tuesday, 14th January – a delay of two days from the original closing date of Sunday, 12th January.

According to Variety’s report, Bill Kramer, the head of the Academy, detailed the updates to the Academy’s 10,000 members in an email dispatched on the same day as the commencement of voting, which was on Wednesday, 8th January.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those affected by the destructive wildfires in Southern California,” the message stated.

Many of our members and fellow professionals reside and operate in the Los Angeles region, and we extend our thoughts to each one of you.

This week, several notable movie premieres in Los Angeles, including Unstoppable, The Wolf Man, and Better Man, have been delayed or canceled due to the ongoing fires.

Instead, the Critics Choice Awards have been rescheduled for Sunday, January 26th, which is two weeks later than originally scheduled.

The 2023 Oscars are set for Sunday, March 2nd, with Conan O’Brien as the host. Notable films like “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Anora,” and “Wicked” are likely to receive numerous nominations during the event.

Last Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards provided a glimpse into which films and performances are gaining momentum, as The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez took home the top honors. Notable acting winners include Demi Moore, Adrien Brody, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin.
