Oscars Add Stunt Design Category: Hollywood’s Biggest Shocker!

Hollywood is flipping out for a new Oscars category.

Starting from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 100th ceremony in 2028, a fresh trophy acknowledging Achievement in Stunt Design will be given to action stunt teams, as announced by the governing board on April 10. This board is responsible for granting the yearly Academy Awards.

In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed that since the inception of cinema, stunt design has been a crucial element in movie production. They are delighted to recognize the groundbreaking work of these artistic and technical professionals. They extend their congratulations for their unwavering dedication and commitment that led them to this significant milestone.

This year, the Stunt Category has been added as the latest addition to the Oscars since the Achievement in Casting category was introduced last year. It will grant its inaugural award at next year’s ceremony. The Academy plans to reveal eligibility and voting guidelines for this new category in 2027.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but revel in the radiant news that has swept through our community! The long-overdue recognition of stunt professionals by the Academy has sent ripples of joy throughout our ranks. Among the celebrated figures is none other than David Leitch, a name synonymous with action and adventure on the silver screen.

David Leitch, you see, didn’t just direct and produce films like The Fall Guy and John Wick; he lived them as a stunt performer in his early Hollywood days. In fact, he, along with fellow stuntman Chris O’Hara, played a pivotal role in the creation of this new category. They tirelessly presented their case to the Board of Governors, persisting until their efforts bore fruit and the category was finally approved. This is truly a testament to their passion, dedication, and unwavering belief in the importance of stunt work in cinematic storytelling.

Leitch expressed on Instagram on April 10 that this has been a long, shared journey for many. Over several years, [O’Hara] and he have built upon the efforts of stunt designers who have tirelessly fought for this cause throughout the last few decades. They are incredibly thankful.

As a devoted member of the Stuntmen’s Association, I too couldn’t help but feel elated, witnessing what Jeff Wolfe, our esteemed president, referred to as a groundbreaking milestone for our fraternity.

He expressed his overwhelming excitement and pride that the Academy has created an Oscar category for stunt action design. In a statement to Variety, he emphasized how essential it has been for decades for stunt performers, coordinators, and designers to contribute significantly to the cinematic experience, often risking their own safety to create iconic on-screen moments.

He added, “This acknowledgement underscores the dedication, ingenuity, imagination, and effort that we put into each scene, whether it’s a tumble, combat, or explosion. It’s not merely a victory for our field—it’s a triumph for storytelling.

As you eagerly anticipate the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, here’s a chance to revisit some unforgettable moments from the 2025 Oscars. Enjoy the trip down memory lane!

22 years have passed since I, a dedicated follower, fondly remember Adrien Brody graciously acknowledging Halle Berry when he received his first Best Actor award for “The Pianist.” Now, I find myself once again in the running for another nomination, this time for “The Brutalist,” and she, prepared and eager, watches with anticipation.

It is clear that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have undergone a transformation following their roles in the musical “Wicked”. They kicked off the 2025 Oscars with a medley of songs, including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz”, “Home” from “The Wiz”, and their film’s popular hit, “Defying Gravity”.

At the 2025 Academy Awards’ red carpet, Molly finds herself in a precarious situation, as she is joined by her Ghost co-star.

2025 Oscars saw Timothée Chalamet, a Best Actor nominee, openly attending with Kylie Jenner as his date, unlike some young actors who prefer to keep their relationships private.

In contrast to other young actors who shy away from revealing their romantic partners, Timothée Chalamet confidently brought Kylie Jenner as his date to the 2025 Oscars, where he was nominated for Best Actor.

Nominated for Best Actor, Colman Domingo ignited a dance craze on screen during a break in “Sing Sing,” urging viewers to keep grooving along with him.

As a grateful recipient of the Best Supporting Actor award, I found a special appreciation for the accolade bestowed upon me by Robert Downey Jr., who presented it. Backstage, I savored every moment sharing my triumph with last year’s laureate, Kieran Culkin from “A Real Pain.

Demi Moore, a debutante at the Oscars for the film “The Substance”, enjoyed her special moment alongside seasoned actress Meg Ryan earlier that night.

Unfortunately, despite the recognition during the awards season, Moore didn’t win an Oscar on that night. Instead, it was Anora’s Mikey Madison who stole the show with her unexpected win for Best Actress.

The nominees for Best Actor, Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Adrien Brody, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan, demonstrated that rivalry can turn into camaraderie within the same category, showing it’s all about love among competitors.

As an ardent admirer, I couldn’t help but cherish the magical moment when past nominee Samuel L. Jackson and Emilia Pérez shared the stage with none other than the radiant Selena Gomez. They graciously presented the Oscars for Best Documentary Short and Feature, ensuring to immortalize that unforgettable evening in our memories forever.

Emilia Pérez, who is famously known as Zoe Saldaña, found herself behind the scenes preparing for her Oscar presentation of cinematography. There, she unexpectedly witnessed Sterling K. Brown and Ana de Armas presenting the award for Best Live Action Short to the movie “I’m Not a Robot.

Prior to Lisa, the Blackpink artist and White Lotus star, taking the stage for her rendition of “Live and Let Die” as a tribute to the James Bond franchise and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, she paused backstage to compose herself.

In the awards ceremony, actresses Margaret Qualley from The Substance and Elle Fanning from A Complete Unknown weren’t among the nominees. However, they were given substantial roles instead. Qualley danced unexpectedly during the James Bond tribute in the evening, while Fanning assisted in presenting the Best Costume Design award to Paul Tazewell from Wicked.

Ariana Grande was spotted alongside her Wicked costar and boyfriend, Ethan Slater, who seemed to have left her in a state of amazement. However, only Ethan and Kieran Culkin are privy to the reason behind this reaction.

2024’s top-tier acting award recipients, Cillian Murphy for Best Actor and Emma Stone for Best Actress, shared a moment before going on stage to honor the current year’s winners, Adrien Brody and Mikey Madison, respectively.

Mikey Madison, the Anora star, showcased her award-winning script alongside her Best Actress Oscar following her unexpected victory.

The Best Actor award recipient, Brody, warmly welcomed the esteemed nine-time Oscar host, Billy Crystal. In a special moment, Crystal joined his co-star from “When Harry Met Sally,” Meg Ryan, to announce the winner of Best Picture – “Anora.
