Oshi no Ko Creator Is Already Launching Their Next Manga (And It’s Very Different)

As a dedicated fan of Aka Akasaka’s work, I find myself both excited and a tad melancholic as we bid adieu to the enigmatic world of “Oshi no Ko.” Over the past four years, this dark idol story has been a captivating rollercoaster ride that has left me spellbound. From the intricate plot twists to the profound character development, Aka Akasaka’s masterful storytelling has undeniably set new standards in the realm of manga.

The popular manga titled “Oshi no Ko” has concluded its run, providing Ruby with the most satisfying ending possible under the given circumstances. Launched in 2020, creator Aka Akasaka dedicated more than four years to crafting this gripping idol drama, which achieved great success due to both its manga and the anime adaptation that captivated audiences worldwide. Immediately following the announcement of the series’ end, Aka revealed he was already working on a new project while also sharing his thoughts on the finale of “Oshi no Ko“.

2024 has been a significant year for finales in anime, with popular series like “My Hero Academia” and “Jujutsu Kaisen” wrapping up their manga stories, and their anime adaptations are now preparing to follow suit. Although the creators of these shonen series, Kohei Horikoshi and Gege Akutami, haven’t announced their retirement after their successful manga runs, they have yet to disclose any information about future projects. Meanwhile, Aka Akasaka didn’t wait long after the conclusion of “Oshi no Ko” to reveal that he would be delving into a new manga universe, which appears to be quite distinct from the story of Ai, Ruby, and Aqua.

Oshi no Ko’s Creator’s New Work

Before embarking on “Oshi no Ko”, Aka Akasaka was known for penning the popular romantic comedy, “Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War”. Now, moving on from “Kaguya-Sama” to “Oshi no Ko”, there’s no official title yet, but publisher Young Jump has hinted that this new story won’t be set in a parallel universe as the previous one. Akasaka’s upcoming work is described as a “fairy tale” where a prince and princess appear to be in a romantic bond within a fantastical realm. This will mark a significant shift from the gripping idol series that gained widespread acclaim recently.

Although not yet officially titled, Aka has indeed confirmed the release of this upcoming work in Spring 2025. Notably, the acclaimed writer of Oshi no Ko will be collaborating with the artistic quartet called Ajichika, who have previously made significant contributions to the creation of Record of Ragnarok.

Oshi No Ko’s Creator Talks The End

In a recent interview, Aka Akasaka explained how the ending of “Oshi no Ko” turned out as he had originally envisioned: “Indeed, the ending followed my expectations. However, for ‘Oshi no Ko,’ I carefully distinguished between what I decided at the start and what I didn’t. I used to be a writer who planned everything from the beginning, but after writing ‘Kaguya-sama,’ I found that the unexpected inner world of characters would sometimes appear, and I wanted to cherish and embrace those aspects as part of their personalities. Consequently, it has become difficult for me to plan everything from start to finish. Thus, while the ending of ‘Oshi no Ko’ was predetermined, I believe that it is a manga that also focuses on developing well-rounded characters, and this approach seems to have become my writing style.
