Warning: Major spoilers ahead for season four of Outer Banks.
Life will never be the same for the Pogues.
The final episode of season four for the show “Outer Banks” aired on November 7, marking the conclusion not just for the series but also for one of its most cherished characters. Following four seasons filled with John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and JJ (Rudy Pankow) braving perilous scenarios in search of treasure, their fortune seems to have finally eluded them.
Which original cast members won’t appear in the fifth and concluding season of the beloved Netflix show?
In a tragic twist, Pankow’s character, the kind-hearted and unwaveringly loyal friend JJ, discovered his true family within the Pogues. Heartbreakingly, this cherished figure meets his end at the hands of none other than Chandler Groff, his biological father – portrayed by J. Anthony Crane in the series. It’s revealed that Groff was also responsible for JJ’s mother’s death. (That’s a tough pill to swallow.)
But just what led to this tragic end? Let’s rewind.
As the fourth season comes to a close, The Pogues are on a mission to find the Blue Crown, a part of Blackbeard the Pirate’s loot, while battling mercenaries throughout their journey.
Despite appearing as if karma had caught up with Chandler following JJ’s abandonment, leaving him stranded in the desert as a punishment for his father’s past misdeeds, an unexpected turn of events occurred later on. In a shocking twist, Chandler resurfaced and took Kiara hostage at knifepoint instead.
In this scenario, JJ surrenders the crown to save her, but Chandler stabs him in his abdomen out of betrayal for abandoning him in the desert. Eventually, with Kiara by his side, JJ breathes his last, expressing his love for her one final time. (Ugh, that hurts!)
Although it’s deeply sad, JJ’s demise won’t be senseless, instead serving as the spark that propels the remaining Pogues into a quest for vengeance in the upcoming fifth season of the show.
The makers, Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate, and Josh Pate, have announced that the series will conclude with a fifth season.
