Regarding the process of deepening their relationship on screen, Balfe expressed: “It was truly rewarding to collaborate with David Barry on these scenes. Navigating how these characters reach such a point is challenging, but working alongside Vanessa Coffey, our intimacy consultant, made the process incredibly effective.
Balfe further explained: “It was quite amusing, in fact, as Sam and I are so familiar with one another, our communication is almost telepathic, and we’ve been performing these scenes for more than ten years.
However, working alongside David has been a unique experience as we haven’t collaborated in this specific manner before. It turned out to be quite intriguing since Vanessa guided us to revisit fundamental aspects, even conducting basic exercises reminiscent of our initial acting classes.
We’re strengthening our trust as we faced challenging situations during that scene. It was our initial opportunity to truly rely on one another, something new for us both.
Balfe continued, “I believe it’s a common agony they both feel. It’s an urgent yearning for them to find some comfort. It’s not primarily about intimacy or enjoyment. Rather, it’s a fundamental human longing for something that can break the spell of this suffering.
It appears that’s where they connect, however, the deep emotions and strong relationship we witness the following day are particularly moving. In the morning, Lord John discloses a deeply emotional and painful aspect of his life, where he struggles to be true to himself due to societal norms, hiding and the suffering this secrecy causes him. The cost of living as a gay man during that time is portrayed in a touching and poetic manner.
