As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s survived countless nights playing the chilling Outlast series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming big-screen adaptation! With Lionsgate and Red Barrels joining forces, it feels like a dream come true (or should I say nightmare?) for fans like me.
The cinematic adaptation of Miles Upshur’s harrowing experience at Mount Massive Asylum, originally depicted in the game Outlast developed by Red Barrels, is now set for the big screen due to a collaboration between Lionsgate and its creators. Bloody Disgusting has revealed that the video game franchise is making its way onto the silver screen, with seasoned series scribe JT Petty tasked with scriptwriting. Petty will not be working in isolation; horror maestro Roy Lee, known for his work on films such as It (2017) and Late Night With The Devil (2024), will also contribute to the film’s production.
The game “Outlast” is known for its nerve-wracking, chilling horror atmosphere. Just one game can supply terror enough for ten films, but creating a movie involves more than just sheer fright. That’s not surprising coming from Lionsgate, the studio behind the “SAW” franchise which has been unsettling audiences since 2004. However, Lee is well-aware of what fans desire and is eager to deliver it in an innovative, fresh manner.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about an upcoming film. In a recent announcement, I (Lee) emphasized that the rich, organically grown lore of this franchise has laid a solid groundwork for us to explore the profound psychological and physical terrors that lie at its heart. This is going to be one chilling ride!
The mix of psychological and physical terror is a fitting characterization, as seen in films such as “The Blair Witch Project” and “REC”, along with games like “Amnesia: The Dark Descent”. Both “Outlast” and “Outlast 2” contain intense and heart-pounding sequences. Through the years, the series has left players feeling traumatized due to its depictions of disturbed mental patients, fanatical cultists, and terrifying creatures that stalk you at every turn.
Regarding the upcoming movie adaptation, it’s uncertain how closely it will follow the original storyline’s key events, but regardless of the changes, the eerie atmosphere reminiscent of the iconic horror games will undoubtedly remain. David Chateauneuf, one of Red Barrels’ co-founders, has expressed his admiration for both Lionsgate and Lee in relation to the project’s development.
As a passionate connoisseur of chilling tales in movies, books, and beyond, I’ve always held Roy Lee’s and Lionsgate’s work in high regard. The spine-tingling thrill of horror films – whether they’re classics or modern masterpieces – has significantly influenced our franchise throughout the years. So, to be collaborating on an Outlast movie with true horror icons is nothing short of a dream…or should I say, a nightmare that’s finally come true!
In a fresh move for the franchise, a film isn’t just the recent daring advancement; last year’s “Outlast Trials” veered from the intense solitude of the early games towards a more intricate collective apprehension. This game allows up to four players to unite in their efforts to endure the challenges designed by a mentally disturbed director of a Cold War-era medical facility. Despite the presence of more individuals to share the hardships, it maintained all the gritty, debilitating frights that made the first game successful over a decade ago.
It’s no surprise that a new platform comes with fresh difficulties, but it wouldn’t be unexpected if the forthcoming Outlast movie manages to evoke the same intense fears that fans have grown accustomed to.
Roy Lee is also a producer on the Minecraft Movie and the upcoming film adaptation of Until Dawn.
