Outnumbered stars divided: make more or quit while they’re ahead?

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless beloved series, I must say that the return of Outnumbered after a decade-long hiatus is like finding a long-lost friend in the most unexpected corner of the world. The Brockman family, with their chaotic antics and heartwarming moments, was a staple in my weekly viewing schedule back in the day, and I must admit that I shed a tear or two upon hearing the news of their return.

After an absence of eight years from screens and more than a decade since its last complete season, the popular show “Outnumbered” has returned.

Back in 2007, a popular sitcom series known as “The Brockman Family” debuted. This show was the brainchild of Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton. The story revolved around the Brockmans, a family often caught up in chaos. Pete and Sue, portrayed by Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner respectively, were the harried parents trying to keep up with their three children who were full of mischief and unpredictability.

Previous to this, the series garnered five seasons of praise, recognition, and accolades. This holiday season, they’re returning for a festive special airing on Boxing Day. However, one might wonder if this is merely a single, standalone event.

Furthermore, this year’s lineup includes a unique airing of Gavin & Stacey, a continuation from the much-anticipated holiday special that aired in 2019.

Could it possibly be that this year’s Outnumbered is emulating their path, by essentially paving the way for another comeback of the Brockman family?

In another interview, co-star Claire Skinner expressed stronger agreement. “I believe this is a single reunion,” she said to Radio Times.

Yet, upon encountering the trio – portrayed by Tyger Drew-Honey, Daniel Roche, and Ramona Marquez – they exhibited a receptive attitude towards the concept.

Speaking about himself, Drew-Honey, aged 28 and portraying the eldest son Jake, expresses to RT that he indeed agrees with continuing the series. He acknowledges the concern that sometimes productions might stretch out unnecessarily for financial gain, but his stance suggests optimism about the show’s continuation.

If someone proposes a new series to us, I won’t outright reject the idea. Instead, I would engage directly with them and ask, “What are your thoughts?” In principle, I am quite interested.

Marquez, aged 22 and portraying the youngest sibling Karen, expresses optimism by saying, “It seems promising,” indicating a positive dynamic persisting among them.

As I grew up watching Outnumbered, its authentic portrayal of family life with young children resonated deeply with me. Though my own experiences may not align perfectly as I age, the show’s enduring charm lies in capturing those universal moments that define parenthood and family dynamics.

However, I continue to find pleasure in observing transitions and progressions as well as movement. I believe having occasional updates would offer an enjoyable sneak peek without prolonging the experience excessively.

“I’m a vaguely similar position, to be honest,” agrees Roche, 25, who plays middle child Ben.

In the same manner I trusted them for this particular occasion, and just as I would trust them should any future event require it, I placed my confidence in Andy and Guy.

When I received the script for this particular project via email, I dove right in and thought to myself, “Indeed, they’ve nailed it – it’s spot-on as far as I’m concerned.” And I must add, I’m no longer that energetic eight-year-old character running around everywhere. Instead, my character seemed like a plausible progression of Ben, transitioning into his early twenties in a realistic manner.

“You know, he still has some of the same traits, but in a way that you’d expect of a young adult.

I understand the potential pitfalls of prolonging the series, but I’m confident in the abilities of our writers and directors to keep it engaging.

Essentially, this boils down to Jenkin and Hamilton’s perspective regarding the future of Outnumbered – when we interviewed them for a previous issue at RT, they mentioned they didn’t have any imminent plans.

Hamilton explains, “That hasn’t crossed our minds much. It might seem blunt, but we’re simply enjoying the present.

Jenkin added, “There could be another thought crossing our minds saying ‘it’s the right moment now’, but we wished to create something truly exceptional for this occasion. After a long wait of eight years, let’s hope everyone is eagerly wondering about where this beloved family has reached.

However, they’re not ruling anything out either – in Jenkins’s own words, “You can hold this against us when we come back next year!”
