As a seasoned gamer with years of gaming experiences under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness upon hearing about People Can Fly‘s recent decision to scale back their ambitions and eliminate 120 staff positions. It’s a tough blow for the industry, especially when it seems like we’re seeing more of these unfortunate events than new game releases lately.
People Can Fly, the renowned game development studio from Poland that created Outriders and Bullet Storm, is significantly reducing its goals. They’ve announced the termination of several projects and let go of 120 employees. This comes after 30 redundancies in January, making them share a regrettable distinction with Deck Nine Games, developers of Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, who also experienced this unfortunate situation twice within a year.
In a recent announcement (thanks to IGN), CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski attributed “external market forces” as the main reason for halting Project Victoria, reducing the scope of Project Bifrost, and restructuring their internal departments. Earlier this year, People Can Fly decided to halt Project Dagger, a collaboration with Take-Two Interactive on its development and publishing.
It’s unfortunate that layoffs happen at any time, but those in December seem particularly harsh. I extend my sympathies to everyone impacted, and I hope the excessive adjustments in the industry after COVID eventually come to an end.
