Over 10K people have added this game to their wishlist — and now, after playing a demo so am I

As a seasoned games analyst with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Winter Burrow left an indelible mark on me at Gamescom 2024. After a day filled with high-octane, adrenaline-pumping titles that blurred together in my mind like a chaotic kaleidoscope, the gentle and soothing pace of Winter Burrow was a much-needed balm for my weary senses.

At this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, we were given an initial glimpse into a quaint, survival-themed game called Winter Burrow. The game’s visual aesthetic reminded many of classic Beatrix Potter illustrations, sparking curiosity among viewers, including myself. After the showcase, developers Pine Creek Games revealed that more than 10,000 people had added the game to their wishlists.

As a tech enthusiast, I hadn’t managed to join their ranks just yet, but lo and behold, an invitation arrived at Gamescom 2024! The Xbox booth was my destination, where the captivating Winter Burrow was showcased as making its debut on Xbox Game Pass in 2025. After the conference, it swiftly became one of the seven games gracing my eagerly awaiting wishlist. Here’s why I believe Winter Burrow is a game worth keeping an eye on.

The perfect game to end a chaotic day

Describing my initial day at the conference as chaotic would be a significant understatement. The grandeur and magnitude of Gamescom exceeded anything I had anticipated. Playing numerous diverse games, predominantly those incorporating combat mechanics, resulted in them becoming indistinct and confusing in my thoughts. It’s quite nerve-wracking when others are watching you play while attempting to recall whether the jump is on A or Y, or if one should break that chest open by smashing it or pressing a button to do so. In essence, I struggle to adapt swiftly between games, and my mind requires a brief moment to catch up.

So what is Winter Burrow all about?

Winter Burrow is an immersive experience that combines survival and crafting elements in a game where you assume the role of a small mouse on a mission to rebuild his family’s abode. This charming, heartwarming title invites you to collect materials like wood and other resources to refurbish your tree stump dwelling, furnish it, and even expand it with additional floors, as hinted by the developers. Could there possibly be a luxurious mouse mansion or penthouse in store for you at the conclusion of this journey?

In comparison to most survival games, this one offers a deeper emotional experience since you’re not just constructing a shelter, but restoring a family dwelling. To begin with, I assembled the armchair, perfect for relaxing by the fire and enjoying the music while regaining my composure after a hectic day. However, once that was done, I braved the snow to find more wood for my home furniture.

The Winter setting is beautiful but treacherous

It’s cold outside of the tree trunk

The ambiance reminded me of the beloved Beatrix Potter books from my childhood; it even seemed as if the creators might have been inspired by ‘The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse’.

Winter Burrow isn’t entirely free from dangers; the chill can be harsh for your little mouse companion. To extend playtime outdoors during winter, consider knitting him a warm sweater and trousers. However, the cold can still penetrate these homemade clothes, so it’s important to return indoors regularly to your comfortable armchair, as even the best protection can only delay the inevitable chill.

As a tech-loving adventurer, I’ve found that the game isn’t just about exploring new territories; it also throws in some challenges along the way. During my journey, I encountered some pesky beetles, which I managed to outmaneuver for valuable resources. However, this level was quite tranquil and served as a gentle introduction to the game. The developers hinted that as you advance, you’ll encounter more hazardous regions, but there are merchants scattered around who can help you trade for the resources you need if you prefer a less daring approach. Ultimately, the level of challenge in this game is entirely up to your playstyle.

I only had 20 minutes with Winter Burrow, but I was already hooked on the loop of trying to restore my home to its former glory and explore beyond the opening area. To do so, I needed to repair a bridge to advance to somewhere with more challenge, but I’ll have to wait until the game’s release to see where that bridge leads. While the game is coming to Xbox Game Pass, I actually think it’s perfect for handheld play, so I’ve added it to my Steam wishlist, along with many others I’m sure who got to play it at the conference. Winter Burrow could be a “dark mouse” in the indie genre when it launches in 2025 on Xbox and Steam.
