Over one billion users will get a new Microsoft user experience, and it has a dark mode

Approximately one billion Microsoft account holders are expected to encounter a revamped sign-in process within the upcoming month. Initially, this new experience has been introduced for Xbox users, and it’s expected to be expanded to Windows, Microsoft 365, and additional services in due course.

By the end of April, most Microsoft account users, regardless of whether they use Windows, the web, or mobile devices, are expected to encounter the updated sign-in process.

Microsoft’s Robin Goldstein announced the update.

Goldstein mentioned that over the recent years, we’ve updated the user interfaces for cloud-based interactions on Windows, Xbox, Microsoft 365, and other platforms to make them more modern,

As innovative authentication solutions such as passkeys emerged, I found myself eager to revamp the sign-in user experience to align with these advancements.

The new design for an enhanced user experience is constructed using Microsoft’s Fluent Design System 2, making it compatible with Windows 11 and contemporary gadgets. Notably, this design includes a much-desired ‘dark mode’.

Instead, you could say that the revamped account sign-in experience from Microsoft is not just a cosmetic change, but rather a complete overhaul aimed at minimizing clutter and improving the presentation of sign-in options.

For several years, the tech titan has advocated for passwordless login, and this process is set to become even more straightforward with the introduction of the updated sign-in page.

The new user interface is optimized for passkeys or other passwordless sign-in methods.

Upon your initial login with the fresh experience, you’ll encounter a request to input a passkey, even though it isn’t essential to do so.

Some Xbox users are currently enjoying the fresh sign-in process, as Microsoft began trials (A/B testing) of this feature back in February.

The revised user experience is going to be gradually introduced across the remaining weeks of March and April, as stated by Microsoft. They anticipate that approximately 95% of all login sessions will encounter the fresh interface in due time.

In the near future, web and mobile applications will have a fresh, updated experience. Meanwhile, Windows devices will eventually be upgraded with this new experience at a later time.

Microsoft Entra accounts will not see a change in the sign in experience.
