Overwatch 2 May Bring Back 6v6 With One Key Change

As a seasoned Overwatch player with countless hours spent on the battlefield, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I dive back into the 6v6 playtest. The change to 5v5 in Overwatch 2 was a hard pill to swallow for many of us who cherished the dynamic and strategic depth that came with six players on each team.

It’s no secret the change from Overwatch’s 6v6 game mode to Overwatch 2’s 5v5 game mode was criticized by fans. As a result, Blizzard has recently released a 6v6 beta playlist for Overwatch 2, giving fans a return to the classic gameplay they were used to. However, fans have wondered if 6v6 is here to stay in Overwatch 2, replacing the newer 5v5 game mode the sequel launched with. Some players worry Blizzard will permanently drop 6v6 and return to 5v5, while others hope it becomes its own playable section of the game, giving fans the option to play either game mode and keep both alive.

In a recent blog post, Game Director Aaron Keller shared insights about the latest play test for Overwatch 2, focusing on the public’s response, modifications made, and potential plans for future 6v6 Overwatch 2. Regrettably, Keller did not provide a definitive answer regarding the permanence of 6v6, instead hinting that, if it were to become a permanent feature, this version would address queue time problems experienced in the past.

For enthusiasts of the original ‘Overwatch’, waiting in long queues has been a familiar challenge due to the fact that many players tend to opt for the DPS role, leaving fewer options for selecting tank or support characters. Keller proposed implementing guidelines when assembling teams, ensuring no more than three and no less than one character per role. The aim is that this system would reduce queue times and inspire players to choose roles other than DPS.

Players have swiftly drawn parallels between the release timing of Overwatch 2’s 6v6 test and the popularity of Marvel Rivals, both being hero shooter games. Unlike Marvel Rivals, however, Overwatch 2 does not currently use a role queue system, which can lead to teams having an excess of DPS characters and a lack of support and tank characters in Marvel Rivals, similar to the issue faced by this game. It’s unclear whether Marvel Rivals inspired Blizzard to reinstate 6v6 in Overwatch 2 or if it was a natural progression, but players are delighted with its return either way.

Keller invited players to participate in a 6v6 game trial and share their insights with Blizzard. Since several characters in Overwatch 2 have been revamped for the shift from 5v5 to 6v6, reversing these alterations for the 6v6 play test requires careful adjustments and a lot of time. Player feedback is crucial when deciding which changes to implement and what functions effectively or ineffectively.

The trial for a 6-versus-6 mode in Overwatch 2 is ongoing until January 6, 2025, and players who are interested should jump at the chance to participate before then. It’s uncertain whether the 6v6 format will continue after that date, as much as fans may wish for it. Blizzard has yet to announce any details about when or if this mode might be discontinued or permanently reinstated, so stay tuned for updates on its future status.

During this period, gamers have the flexibility to switch between different gameplay styles, and they can also relish the array of cosmetic enhancements and special events that are rolled out. It appears Blizzard is making efforts to satisfy their players, with the introduction of 6v6 mode being a significant move towards strengthening their bond with the gaming community.
