In simpler terms, this week, Blizzard provided an inside peek into the intricate process of Overwatch 2 matchmaking and discussed ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of your gaming experiences.
The goal? Create fun, fair matches without long waits.
Fair Matches, Not Just Fast Ones
Achieving victory is wonderful, but what truly matters to Blizzard is ensuring that contests are fair. The excitement lies in situations where both teams have an equal opportunity to emerge victorious, roughly a 50/50 scenario. In such matches, your abilities, strategic thinking, and crucial moments significantly influence the final result.
That’s where MMR, or Matchmaking Rating, comes in.
What Is MMR?
Each player in Overwatch 2 is assigned a Matchmaking Rating (MMR) number according to their gameplay skills. While you can see visible ranks such as Diamond or Platinum, Blizzard employs this hidden MMR system to ensure fair matches are arranged.
In a queue, the system searches for opponents with comparable skill levels based on their Matchmaking Rank (MMR). If it takes too long to gather a group, it gradually widens the search parameters. Generally, the goal is to ensure that matches are as close as possible in terms of player skill level.
Smarter Role Matching
Although team Matchmaking Ratings (MMRs) might not be flawless, Blizzard employs a system known as Role Delta to ensure a fair balance among roles. For instance, if your tank’s rating is 1.5, the system will attempt to pair you with another tank who also has a 1.5 rating—despite minor discrepancies in the support and DPS ratings.
This keeps one-vs-one role matchups feeling fairer and more competitive.
Team vs Player Fairness
Overwatch 2 matchmaking balances on two levels:
- Team fairness: Do both sides have an even win chance?
- Player fairness: Are you matched against players close to your own skill?
In the Competitive Role Queue system, most games result in a win probability between 45% and 55%. This narrow span encourages fairness by preventing extreme outcomes, yet still provides room for diversity and unpredictability.
Maintaining fair play for players can be more challenging during off-hours and higher rankings. This is when waiting times might increase, or the system could expand the Matchmaking Rating (MMR) range, leading to games that seem less balanced.
How Stadium Mode Is Different
In stadium matchmaking, everyone begins at the rookie level for every season, earning points as victories are achieved. This system contrasts with the main modes, allowing players to advance in rank even if their hidden Match Making Rating (MMR) is superior to their displayed rank.
Occasionally, beginners might find themselves in advanced matches. However, if their Stadium Matchmaking Rating is high, it means they are competing at the appropriate skill level.
Currently, when playing Overwatch 2’s Stadium mode, my matches are determined by Matchmaking Rating (MMR) rather than rank. Blizzard is actively seeking improved methods for maintaining a well-balanced lobby without perplexing the players in the process.
Queue Time Fixes Coming
In venues like Stadium, high-skilled support players often encounter extended delays due to fewer available teammates and an uneven distribution of roles.
Blizzard is actively working on solutions and will share plans as they evolve.
The Bottom Line
Improvement in the matchmaking process may never reach perfection, yet Blizzard continues to put considerable effort into refining it. They’re not just working on more intelligent role assignments, but also making continuous adjustments according to players’ actions, ensuring that the system remains adaptable and evolving over time.
