Pacific Rim Prequel Series Begins Development at Legendary

As a gamer with a soft spot for mecha anime and a deep-rooted love for Pacific Rim since its debut in 2013, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism about this upcoming prequel series. On one hand, the news of Eric Heisserer overseeing IP development is exciting, considering his impressive track record. However, with so little information available at this point, it’s hard not to wonder if we’re in for another Jaeger-sized wait like the one that followed Pacific Rim Uprising.

Exciting news! The universe of Pacific Rim is set for a revival. It’s been some time since the live-action mecha series produced fresh content, but the intellectual property certainly hasn’t been gathering dust. In fact, Legendary Entertainment has disclosed that a prequel to Pacific Rim is underway, and this development is largely due to a television agreement with Eric Heisserer.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that, according to Variety, I’ve been tasked by Legendary Entertainment, alongside Carmen Lewis, to spearhead IP development for some exciting projects! Our first venture together is none other than the much-anticipated “Pacific Rim” series. Although details are still scarce, it’s being touted as an origin story, giving us a glimpse into the birth of this anime-inspired universe. So if you’ve been yearning to uncover the origins of this captivating series, Legendary Entertainment has listened and is ready to deliver!

Jason Clodfelter, the president of Legendary Television, couldn’t help but shower praise on Eric Heisserer following their recent television deal. In a new statement, he expressed, “Eric is a versatile, productive creative mind whose history of both critical and commercial triumphs truly speaks for itself.”

“We’re excited to start our collaboration with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen as they delve into the expansive world of the globally acclaimed Pacific Rim series. We believe their creative direction will add an exciting new chapter to Legendary’s cherished franchise.”

If you haven’t had a chance to watch “Pacific Rim”, here’s some background: This popular series marked its decade milestone last year. Released in 2013 under Guillermo del Toro’s direction, it starred Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, and others. The science fiction film stood out by presenting a unique story within the big-budget genre, drawing inspiration from anime like “Mobile Suit Gundam”. Set in the future, “Pacific Rim” followed the tale of humans piloting enormous robots known as Jaegers to combat an invasive race of monstrous creatures called kaiju. The narrative felt reminiscent of anime plots, and del Toro’s passion for the genre was evident throughout.

Following the debut of “Pacific Rim,” the franchise made a comeback on the big screen. “Pacific Rim Uprising” premiered in 2018, directed by Steven S. DeKnight and received mixed reactions from critics. More recently, the series found new life as an anime production. In partnership with Polygon Pictures, Netflix produced “Pacific Rim: The Black,” which ran for two seasons until its conclusion in 2022.
