Pacific Rim TV Series Hits Prime Video: Will Raleigh Becket Return?

Amazon’s Prime Video is offering a gateway back to the Anteverse. The live-action Pacific Rim TV series, previously announced last year, has found its home on Amazon’s streaming platform, as reported by Variety. Legendary Television is producing this series in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, who are also involved in productions like Reacher, Fallout, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and The Boys.

Eric Heisserer, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter known for movies like ‘Arrival’ directed by Denis Villeneuve and the creator of Netflix show ‘Shadow and Bone’, will be the writer and executive producer on the upcoming ‘Pacific Rim’ prequel series, which currently doesn’t have a title.

The well-known production company, Legendary Pictures, was responsible for creating Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 movie titled “Pacific Rim.” This film revolves around a team of rangers from the Pan Pacific Defense Corps who pilot enormous robots known as Jaegers. These robots are psychically connected and are used to combat Kaiju: colossal monsters that emerge from a portal in the Pacific Ocean, originating from another world called Anteverse. The sequel, “Pacific Rim Uprising,” directed by Steven S. DeKnight, was released in 2018.

According to the report, a possible Pacific Rim 3 isn’t definitively excluded. (Del Toro’s movie grossed $411 million worldwide on a budget of $200 million, while Uprising, estimated to cost between $155-$176 million, earned only $290 million.) Legendary TV expanded the franchise with two seasons of the Netflix animated series Pacific Rim: The Black, which ran from 2021 to 2022.

Charlie Hunnam, who portrayed the Gypsy Danger pilot Raleigh Becket in the 2013 movie “Pacific Rim”, expressed a year ago that he would join the franchise again under one stipulation: “I would do anything Guillermo is involved with,” he shared with Inverse. “If Guillermo asks me to be part of Pacific Rim 3, I’ll be there, or any other project he wants me for.

In the sequel to Pacific Rim, titled Pacific Rim: Uprising, we meet Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, who teams up with Nate and Amara. This film takes place a decade after the events of the first movie. In an interview from 2018, John Boyega hinted that if there were to be a Pacific Rim 3, it might involve the Jaeger pilots venturing into the world of the Kaiju this time around.

However, in 2024, DeKnight disclosed information regarding a Pacific Rim sequel that didn’t come to fruition: a collaboration between the Jaegers and the Kaiju against the Precursors, extraterrestrial beings from Anteverse who utilized the Kaiju for colonization purposes on other planets.

Last year, DeKnight explained to SYFY WIRE that his original plan for the story was a revelation: the Kaiju monsters weren’t naturally aggressive creatures, but rather controlled and mistreated by the Precursors. The humans had freed some of them, leading to an unexpected alliance between Jaegers and Kaiju in the final act of the movie. This alliance was set to culminate in the end of the film, where humans could traverse different dimensions within the franchise’s multiverse.
