Paddington 4 in the works – and a TV series and stage show

Since the debut of the initial movie in 2014, Paddington has undeniably solidified his place as a cherished national icon, and now, StudioCanal’s head Anna Marsh has shared that exciting new developments are on the horizon for this adored series.

According to an interview with Deadline, Marsh affirmed that the affectionate, jam-loving bear will embark on yet another cinematic journey, and moreover, he’ll star in both a television series and a stage production.

She clarified that the fourth movie is in the works, and they’ve also got ideas for upcoming films. Additionally, they’re developing a new television series, along with a stage show musical in collaboration with Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley.

With each of the three films already showing high-quality production, the hint of more projects on the horizon brings great excitement for the audience – even though specific updates about the following movie may still take some time to materialize.

The musical was initially revealed to be under development by the same company behind the successful stage production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, dating back to December 2023. Tom Fletcher of McFly is responsible for composing the music and lyrics, while Jessica Swale, a recipient of the Olivier Award, handles the scriptwriting duties.

It appears that the upcoming show is expected to draw inspiration from both the films and Michael Bond’s famous novels, with plans for a debut on London’s West End set for some time towards the end of 2025.

Absolutely, Paddington Bear has been an integral element of the UK’s cultural panorama for over 65 years, ever since Michael Bond’s initial book was published in 1958. However, there has been a significant resurgence in the character’s popularity following the release of Paul King’s first movie about a decade ago.

The two follow-up movies were warmly accepted by the audience, and the 2017 release of Paddington 2 was particularly praised and is now considered a contemporary masterpiece. This acclaim can be largely attributed to Hugh Grant’s remarkable performance as antagonist Phoenix Buchanan.

In the United Kingdom, the third movie featuring Paddington Bear, titled “Paddington in Peru,” was launched in November of the previous year. This time around, control shifted from director Paul King to Dougal Wilson, while Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas joined the ensemble of actors.

In our favorable assessment, we termed it as “continuous excitement packed with numerous unexpected elements,” and characterized it as an “uplifting film that undeniably lifts your spirits.
