As a seasoned moviegoer who’s seen his fair share of blockbusters and indie films alike, I must say the news about the delayed release of “Paddington in Peru” has piqued my curiosity. Having grown up with the delightful adventures of this lovable bear, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia at the prospect of another installment.
The release date for “Paddington in Peru” has been pushed back, as reported by Deadline. Instead of premiering on January 17, 2025, the sequel is now set to debut in U.S. cinemas on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025. This new date means “Paddington in Peru” will be up against “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is also scheduled for release on the same day.
There was no explanation provided for the decision to make the change. The movie “Paddington in Peru” started showing in selected international locations such as the United Kingdom earlier this month. At present, the film has earned approximately $25.2 million from screenings in both England and Poland.
In its third outing, Paddington in Peru, the beloved character continues his adventures, after two highly-acclaimed films, Paddington and Paddington 2. These movies were widely appreciated, boasting a 97% and 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes respectively. Yet, despite the positive reviews, the ticket sales didn’t mirror this success, particularly in the U.S. markets; the original film managed to earn $76.2 million domestically, while the sequel only grossed $40.9 million.
It’s no wonder that the Paddington films have consistently done well in their home country, Britain, considering they were brought to life by British author Michael Bond. The first movie raked in $98.9 million in England, and the second installment, Paddington 2, was an even greater success there, earning $110.9 million.
“Sony might have intentionally scheduled ‘Paddington in Peru’ to compete with ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, considering that the latter, a highly anticipated Marvel Studios film featuring Harrison Ford as Red Hulk, is expected to dominate the box office during its premiere weekend. However, Sony seems unperturbed by this, as they recognize the Paddington series as having a stronger international appeal and less dependence on US ticket sales. Previously, neither of the first two Paddington movies managed to secure the top spot in the domestic box office upon release, so it’s likely that ‘Paddington in Peru’ wouldn’t have taken the No. 1 position even if it had premiered elsewhere.
Sony is keen on ensuring that “Paddington in Peru” has the optimal chance to thrive, and moving its release might help achieve that goal. With the holiday season being particularly packed for family-friendly films, titles like “Wicked,” “Moana 2,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” are already dominating the scene. If “Paddington in Peru” had stuck with its initial release date over Martin Luther King Day weekend, it might have gotten overshadowed among so many other films. By shifting the release, “Paddington in Peru” now offers families with younger children a more whimsical alternative to the numerous superhero or conspiracy-laden thrillers that are currently popular.
