As a longtime admirer of the Paddington series, I must say that while “Paddington in Peru” might not quite reach the heights of its predecessors, it still manages to deliver a heartwarming, laugh-out-loud adventure that leaves you with a smile on your face.
Paddington in Peru is in cinemas from Friday. Add it to your watchlist
Without beating around the bush: While Paddington in Peru may not be quite as impressive as its previous films, it certainly gives them a run for their money.
If you compare two highly popular and critically praised family movies of late, it’s understandable if this one doesn’t quite reach the same heights, but don’t worry – this movie is jam-packed with endless entertainment!
This time around, it’s not Paddington who’s found himself in an unusual location, but rather his family, as he embarks on a journey back to his roots, Peru. The impetus for this adventure stems from a message received from the headmistress (Olivia Colman) of the Retirement Home for Bears in Peru, where Paddington’s Aunt Lucy lives.
It appears that Aunt Lucy seems unusual, prompting the Brown family to make an unexpected visit all at once. Mrs. Brown (portrayed by Emily Mortimer) views this as a final opportunity for her to connect with her children before they move out, while Mr. Brown (Hugh Bonneville) sees it as a moment to demonstrate his courage and ambition to his superiors. The reason Mrs. Bird (Julie Walters) accompanies them isn’t explicitly stated, but it proves beneficial as she delivers two of the film’s most humorous moments and brings laughter to every scene she shares with Colman.
Upon reaching Peru, Paddington and his companions discover that Aunt Lucy is nowhere to be found. Yet, they uncover a hint that leads them on a dangerous expedition deep into the jungle in search of her. The narrative then unfolds in a series of connected episodes, but what truly sets it apart is an unexpected turn involving the movie’s antagonist – the crafty and gold-hungry boat captain Hunter Cabot, portrayed by Antonio Banderas.
Translating the setting to Peru presented a daring move for a franchise, as it was heavily steeped in the quintessential British atmosphere that contributed significantly to its allure. Some viewers might find the prospect of such a shift reminiscent of an unwelcome reimagining, perhaps evoking memories of a Chequers-less Busby Street.
In the end, everything works out fine. The movie undeniably exudes Britishness, with Bonneville alone ensuring this authenticity; his portrayal of a serious character traversing a jungle village is remarkably accurate to the point of being amusingly so.
Olivia Colman portrays a cheerful, melodious nun with a zest for life, accompanied by vengeful spirits, daring llama rides evading gigantic boulders reminiscent of Indiana Jones, nods to Buster Keaton, and tarantulas with vibrant-hued knees. Amidst the whirlwind of slapstick humor, there’s a heartwarming tale about the importance of multicultural acceptance and parents learning to adapt as their children venture out on their own journeys.
As the new director, Dougal Wilson keeps the film filled with creative comedic scenes that rarely slow down. While the slapstick chaos caused by Paddington might not reach the same level of grandiosity, scope, and impact as in past films, there’s an excellent musical sequence, numerous chuckle-worthy moments, and a plethora of amusing side-splitting instances. Additionally, some humorous cameos add to the overall hilarity.
This blend of endearment, personal narrative, and witty humor seems slightly more contrived compared to previous instances, hinting at a touch more planning. However, it’s just a slight shift in approach.
The movie titled “Paddington in Peru” is a heartwarming film that genuinely brightens your mood. Plus, there’s an unexpected bonus during the end credits that adds another layer of delight to the experience.
