Saturday Night – REVIEW

Jason Reitman, along with co-writer Gil Kenan, express a deep affection for Saturday Night Live, having had a brief stint as a writer on the show themselves. This film can be seen as a heartfelt tribute to a classic American television series that has experienced both remarkable highs and disappointing lows – when it falters, it really falters. The movie starts off at a fast pace, with the camera following the producer through the studio hallways and offices, trying to salvage the show for the night. The cast includes Chevy Chase (portrayed by Cory Michael Smith), John Belushi (Matt Wood), Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt), Jane Curtin (Kim Matula), Laraine Newman (Emily Fairn) and Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris). The first three characters are superbly portrayed by the actors, who capture Chase’s arrogance, Belushi’s unpredictability, and Aykroyd’s intelligence. However, the female characters seem to be sidelined, with minimal screen time given to showcase Gilda Radner’s talent effectively.
