Just to clarify, this list isn’t based on box office earnings, but on how good the movies are overall. A film appearing higher on the list might not have been a financial success in theaters, but it’s still among the best from the summer of 2016. Plus, great movies tend to find viewers through streaming, so it’s hard to say if a movie will eventually become profitable anyway.

While DC Comics aimed to simplify its complex history with Crisis on Infinite Earths, Aquaman and Atlantis were largely overlooked. Simu Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Timo Tjahjanto will direct the Sleeping Dogs movie. He did so by retweeting Tjahjanto’s post, which quoted Bram Stoker’s Dracula, saying, “We’ll cross oceans of time to make this.” Fans of the Sleeping Dogs game have reason to be thrilled, as Tjahjanto’s previous film, The Night Comes For Us, a gritty Indonesian crime movie, shares a similar style and atmosphere. While it’s a different story, the visual and thematic connections suggest how Tjahjanto might approach the Sleeping Dogs adaptation. He’s even stated that The Night Comes For Us includes many references to Sleeping Dogs, even down to the costumes.

Okay, let me tell you about Dexter: Resurrection. It definitely doubled down on the over-the-top nature of the whole premise, which, honestly, after everything that happened in the original series, felt…necessary. I mean, we’re talking about a middle-aged serial killer who should have died from a gunshot wound, but thanks to some seriously strong plot armor, he’s back for another go-round. And the storyline? He infiltrates a club of fellow killers and starts taking them out. It’s completely ridiculous, and frankly, I found it kind of charming. But, and this is a big but, Resurrection just didn’t have that special something that made the original series so compelling. Something was missing.

Beau DeMayo, who previously led the creative direction of X-Men ’97, shared on X what he had envisioned for Gambit’s storyline. He planned to feature Gambit in Season 3, adapting the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ arc where Magneto tasks him with gathering a team to locate and steal the M’Krann Crystal.

The Silent Hill series saw a strong comeback with the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2. While the remake was well-received, it remained to be seen if Konami could create a truly new and successful installment. They proved they could with Silent Hill f in 2025, which received widespread praise from both fans and critics, even earning a nomination at The Game Awards. Now, all eyes are on Silent Hill: Townfall, which is currently anticipated to launch around 2026.

Netflix subscribers have until December 31st to watch Premonition, a thrilling psychological movie starring Sandra Bullock. The film follows a woman who experiences time shifts as she tries to prevent her husband’s death. It also features Julian McMahon, Nia Long, and other talented actors. Premonition has been available on Netflix since the fall, but it will be removed on January 1st.

Even though studios keep attempting to bring back popular horror franchises, it’s not always a good idea. Some series are better left untouched. A prime example is The Blair Witch Project, which is getting another installment despite already facing significant creative challenges.
