As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few games shift from paid to free-to-play, I must admit that the recent Palworld debacle had me on the edge of my seat. I’ve spent countless hours, not to mention hard-earned cash, on games that have then gone free, leaving me feeling like I’d been played. So when I heard whispers of Palworld potentially following suit, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of dread.
There’s been speculation among Palworld players about whether the game will adopt a free-to-play model following recent statements from its developers. In an interview, Palworld boss Takuro Mizobe mentioned that they were considering a live-service, free-to-play model for the paid Xbox and PC game, but a new statement from the developer clarifies that this information was outdated and Palworld will not be transitioning to a free-to-play game.
In the interview I recently came across, published by ASCII.jp, there was an intriguing question posed to Mizobe about the future of our beloved game. He suggested two possible paths: one, maintaining the game as it is now with players purchasing it traditionally; the other, a more dynamic approach – transforming Palworld into a LiveOps game.
Stir up strong reactions and debate among the Palworld community, who had previously purchased the game, as they grapple with the idea that their paid game could potentially be made available for free to others. Additionally, many players appreciate the current Palworld system and are concerned about what a free-to-play version might entail, especially since such games often incorporate additional monetization methods like battle passes in order to generate revenue.
It appears there was unnecessary excitement over this matter. Whether this recent or revised interview has surfaced again, it’s unclear; however, what’s certain is that the information provided in it is no longer accurate. The Palworld Twitter account clarified this point in a statement released on Saturday, addressing the free-to-play controversy and reassuring players that there will be no changes to the current status.
The interview you’re referring to was held several months back. At that point, we were brainstorming the optimal strategy for Palworld, aiming to develop a game that would endure and thrive over time. We’re still debating this internally, as it can be tricky to choose the right direction, but one thing we’ve made a decision about is that the Free-to-Play/Game-as-a-Service (F2P/GaaS) model doesn’t align with our goals.
Concerning the Future Development of Palworld:
— Palworld (@Palworld_EN) September 14, 2024
The original text suggests that Palworld wasn’t originally intended to function with the specified model, and making changes to accommodate it now would involve excessive effort. However, regular updates for additional and enhanced content will continue for Palworld. Additionally, potential Downloadable Content (DLCs) and new skins for various Pals in Palworld may still be offered as paid options down the line.
Pocketpair mentioned that they’re thinking about additional skins and downloadable content (DLC) for Palworld in the future to help fund development. However, they plan to revisit this topic with everyone as we get nearer to that stage. Right now, their main focus is ensuring Palworld becomes an exceptional game.
Looking back, it’s clear that there were signs suggesting the information from the interview might not have been up-to-date. Mizobe mentioned plans for a new map and raids in Palworld for players to explore, however, the Sakurajima Island was added earlier this year, and Palworld already offers various raids. Despite the claims about free-to-play, many people were excited but Pocketpair’s statement should now calm down the excitement, at least temporarily.
