As a seasoned Path of Exile player with countless hours spent in the dark and gritty world of Wraeclast, I must say that while the delay of Path of Exile 2‘s early access launch is disappointing, it’s comforting to know that Grinding Gear Games is putting in the necessary work behind the scenes. The complexity of integrating account systems for both games, ensuring backwards compatibility, and dealing with the “strange demons” lurking in their databases, is not a task for the faint-hearted.
Grinding Gear Games has pushed back the launch of Path of Exile 2’s early access from November 15th to December 6th. This includes releases for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. In a recent video update, game director Jonathan Rogers explained that the delay is due to extended work on the backend server infrastructure that has taken longer than anticipated.
It’s important to address the challenge of making sure that microtransactions from the original game function properly in Path of Exile 2. To achieve this, we need to merge the account systems for both Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2, as well as those for the console versions. In order to preserve compatibility with older data, this integration has to be carefully planned out. During the process of moving databases, some unexpected issues (referred to as “strange demons”) were encountered by our team.
“Why do several accounts share the same nickname, email address, or Steam ID? Is it due to a mistake or a specific process? And what’s with this account name that appears to be random and indecipherable? To prevent any confusion or loss of data, our team is taking extra care to make sure everything is properly set up.
Simultaneously revising our backend code requires extensive load testing to prevent any potential collapses when a large influx of players, as expected during launch, access the game. While Rogers is optimistic that the team could have initially launched, he’s not completely assured it will run smoothly without any issues, hence the decision for a delay.
The full unveiling of everything in our early access stage, even encompassing the final phase, is scheduled for approximately four weeks from now. Keep an eye out for more news until that time.
Introduced in 2019, what initially began as an additional campaign for the original “Path of Exile” has since evolved into a separate release – “Path of Exile 2”. This new version boasts 12 character classes, each with three unique Ascendancies, along with numerous gameplay adjustments and enhancements. For instance, you won’t need to link gear anymore.
