From my vantage point, the early access phase of Path of Exile 2 has been nothing short of triumphant, reaching a staggering peak of 578,000 simultaneous players and maintaining a robust 225,000 over a month post-launch. As a devoted Diablo series enthusiast, I’ve pondered the potential implications of Path of Exile 2’s emergence on my beloved ARPG genre. With Season 7 of Diablo 4 looming, the competitive landscape between these two titans is becoming more defined – sharper than ever since yesterday’s Diablo 4 developer broadcast.
While Path of Exile 2 is honing in on its intricate and hardcore allure, Diablo 4 is amplifying its efforts to cater to a broader, casual demographic. The upcoming Season 7 introduces several modifications intended to assist casual players in navigating the endgame more effortlessly – a shrewd strategy by Blizzard, and here’s why.
The Diablo 4 audience is more casual than you think
I consider myself a leisurely Diablo 4 player, not a professional streamer or high-end content creator. I don’t aim for the highest difficulty levels or max out numerous characters every season. Typically, I complete my Season Journey within two weeks on average, and often collect some Mythic Uniques during playtime.
Most Diablo 4 players don’t follow this pattern. Many log in for brief periods after work, taking one to two months to finish their Season Journey – and that’s perfectly okay. From the feedback I receive, it seems many players aren’t using optimized build guides or fine-tuning their gear for Torment 4. Instead, they’re savoring the game at their own pace, and Diablo 4 is designed to accommodate both them and players like me.
Last night’s Season 7 developer chat made it clear that Blizzard is focusing more on catering to this casual audience with a few strategic changes.
- Early chapters of the Season Journey have been reworked to help casual players hit endgame faster.
- Seasonal Paragon points will now carry over to Eternal characters, ensuring that consistent gameplay rewards even the most time-strapped players.
- Archetype Caches have been added, offering build-specific rewards like “Pyromancer Sorceress” gear.
- Feedback from the PTR has led to simplified elements of the Season of Witchcraft mechanics, explicitly aimed at new players.
Along the river of development, there’s been a strong focus on simplifying gameplay for beginners, making it less intimidating. This change in approach has certainly caught the attention of influential gamers such as Rhykker, who have delved deeply into this topic within the gaming community.
Diablo 4 has tried different approaches and this is what works
Since its debut in 2022, Diablo 4 has grappled with an identity dilemma, striving to blend the charm of Diablo 2 with the requirements of a contemporary live-service game. A quote from Rod Fergusson from a 2024 interview that I conducted has become particularly noteworthy in these debates and has resurfaced recently:
“When you debut something, you do so under certain assumptions. We assumed that D4 would be more like D2. This assumption was that players would tolerate the lengthy grind for a Unique or an Uber Unique specifically, as it could take years in Diablo II to find one. However, we discovered quite swiftly that if you don’t provide me with my Uber during the season, I become discontented. So, we realized, oh, wow, okay. Initially, we didn’t have an Uber currency or a way to create the Uber you were seeking yourself. But now, if you’re not finding it, you can actually manufacture it for yourself. This is quite different. It’s just a recognition of how much player behavior has evolved over 20 years. Today’s players value their time more and want immediate gratification, which is characteristic of a live service. So, the idea that I’d get a unique every six months doesn’t appeal to me; instead, I need all the uniques within six months.”
This clarity that Brent (Associate Game Director) speaks about is about giving players more control, understanding their actions, and adapting accordingly.
The quote highlights a significant hurdle for Blizzard in Diablo’s evolution – tailoring its classic formula to contemporary demands while maintaining franchise loyalty. Initial criticism of Diablo 4 centered around excessive progression grinding and rare item scarcity, compelling Blizzard to implement more inclusive mechanisms like crafting currency for Mythic Uniques and earlier Helltide access, streamlining the leveling process.
On the other hand, Path of Exile 2 thrives on intricacy. Despite routine adjustments to overpowered builds during Early Access that may necessitate character restructuring, its player base remains undeterred. Conversely, changes in Diablo 4, such as the controversial Spiritborn Eagle Evade nerf, frequently spark controversy and jokes about Blizzard ‘eliminating enjoyment.’
As of now, it’s quite simple to trigger Gas Cloud explosions when paired with continuous Ignite abilities like Flame Wall. In an imminent update, we will be modifying the explosion damage for both Gas Grenade and Gas Arrow. In the future, our aim is to alter the system so that…December 9, 2024
In both scenarios, adjustments are crucial to ensure the longevity of the games, yet it’s interesting to note how the audiences perceive them differently. Diablo 4, being developed by a larger studio with a substantial budget, invites more scrutiny and criticism, understandably so, but it still stands apart from the other game in terms of audience reception.
Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 are two very different games, and that’s a good thing for players
It seems more suitable for Blizzard to steer Diablo 4 towards a less complex, casual style, as attempting to match Path of Exile 2’s intricacy could drive away many players. Instead, Diablo 4 is carving its own path as an easier-to-digest, comforting ARPG, ideal for unwinding after a tough day.
On the other hand, Path of Exile 2 flourishes as a sanctuary for dedicated gamers who crave depth and challenge. Grinding Gear Games even consulted their community about simplifying certain aspects, but the response was overwhelmingly negative. Path of Exile 2 should capitalize on what makes it unique: a steep learning curve and a focus on rewarding mastery. My colleague, a self-proclaimed Diablo 2 purist, has found his niche in Path of Exile 2.
Ultimately, both games will succeed by catering to their specific audiences. Path of Exile 2 will remain the premier ARPG for those yearning for complexity, while Diablo 4 offers a polished, accessible alternative. As someone who appreciates both games but prefers the less challenging option, I’m excited to see them each chart their unique paths. After all, we can’t all aspire to the hardcore feats of Elon Musk.
