In my own words, I, a follower, am sharing that the esteemed star and Tony Award-winning actress, Patti LuPone, has expressed regret over her latest remarks directed at fellow Broadway performers.
In a statement published on May 31st, Patti LuPone expressed remorse for her remarks made during an interview with The New Yorker, specifically those regarding Kecia Lewis, which she acknowledged as degrading and disrespectful.
LuPone expressed regret for her impulsive and emotional reactions during the interview, acknowledging that they were unsuitable and caused offense. She feels deeply sorry for her actions, which went against the values cherished within the community. She wishes to have a personal conversation with Audra and Kecia to express her heartfelt apologies.
Additionally, she wholeheartedly agrees with the content of the open letter shared the previous day. For LuPone, theatre has always been about supporting each other and providing a safe space for those who feel excluded elsewhere. She admitted her mistake, took full responsibility, and is determined to make amends. In her view, the entire theatre community deserves better behavior.
As a passionate theater enthusiast, I felt compelled to address a recent situation that has stirred up emotions within our beloved Broadway community. Following the signing of an open letter by over 500 performers, I found myself in the midst of a heated discussion. My previous remarks, particularly those directed at certain individuals, have been met with criticism and disapproval.
To clarify, my comments towards Lewis and McDonald were not intended to be disrespectful or hurtful. In hindsight, I recognize that they were uncalled for and I sincerely apologize for any pain caused. I want to make it clear that I hold both in the highest regard for their contributions to our cherished industry.
I understand that my words have sparked a wave of criticism, with many calling for my exclusion from this year’s Tony Awards ceremony. I hear you, and I am taking your concerns seriously. I am committed to learning from this experience and growing as an individual, both on and off the stage.

Patti LuPone’s career took off in the ’70s when she joined The Acting Company founded by John Houseman, touring with him for four years before gaining international recognition through her roles in productions like “Eva” and “Anything Goes.” Beyond her extensive stage performances, LuPone has frequently graced both TV and movie screens throughout her career. In 2024, LuPone marked her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Lilia Calderu, sharing the screen with an impressive ensemble cast that includes Joe Locke, Aubrey Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, and Ali Ahn.
