Paul Tazewell Makes Oscars History

The 2025 Oscars are wickedly historic.

Following Paul Tazewell‘s triumph in the Best Costume Design category at the 97th Academy Awards (which took place on March 2, hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles), he expressed the importance of this special occasion.

From the stage, he announced that he was the first African-American to win the costume design award for his ‘Wicked’ work, causing the audience to rise and cheer in appreciation. He expressed his immense pride about this achievement.

The individual who turned 60 years old, nominated alongside Arianne Phillips from A Complete Unknown, Lisy Christy from Conclave, Janty Yates from Gladiator II, and Linda Muir from Nosferatu, expressed, “This is truly amazing! Thank you, Academy for this remarkable recognition. I am incredibly proud of this honor.” (To view the complete list of 2025 Oscar winners, click here.)

Tazewell, who had earlier been recognized for his contributions to Steven Spielberg’s film “West Side Story”, also acknowledged the stars of the movie, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, during his speech. Both of them have received nominations in the categories Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

In the land of Oz, my muses, Cynthia and Ariana, I adore you immensely. And to the entire cast, I express my gratitude. I appreciate your faith in me as I breathe life into your characters. This experience means everything to me. Thank you.

Prior to his groundbreaking victory, Tazewell received acclaim from Bowen Yang on Saturday Night Live, who humorously bestowed the award upon him during the ceremony.

Being dressed by the brilliant Paul Tazewell is undeniably one of the most humbling highlights of my professional journey. Paul, I must confess, I’m almost embarrassed to express my admiration for your exceptional work without coming across as utterly boastful. However, I can’t help but gush about it, because it truly does tell a story – a testament to your genius, you mastercraftsman.

Additionally, he jokingly commented, “If I have to repeat ‘luxurious textiles’ one more time in an interview, I might just leap off this stage against all laws of physics.

Before declaring Tazewell as the victor, Bowen gently remarked, “Paul, it’s simply audacious of you to be so uniquely gifted. I adore you deeply.

The Wrong One” by Clement Ducol, Camille & Jacques Audiard, featuring Zoë Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascon as Emilia Pérez

This new title maintains the original’s tone while being easier to read and more intuitive for an English-speaking audience. The focus remains on the story, its authors, and the talented cast, making it appealing to potential viewers.

“The Journey” written by Diane Warren, performed by H.E.R. – The Six Triple Eight

“Like a Bird” written by Adrian Quesada and Abraham Alexander-  Sing Sing

Title Suggestion for “Mi Camino” (Selena Gomez & Edgar Ramirez):

Emilia’s Journey: A Tale of Two Souls

This new title maintains the essence and cultural significance of the original while providing a clear understanding of the storyline, as it follows the journey of two main characters, Emilia and her companion. The title also creates curiosity about the unique bond between these two souls and encourages listeners to explore their emotional connection throughout the song.

In my perspective, the song “Never Too Late” is a composition penned by the talented quartet consisting of Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin, and Andrew Watt. As a dedicated follower, I’d express it this way: “Elton John’s ‘Never Too Late’ is a song that carries the magic of collaboration from Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin, and Andrew Watt.”>
