As a gamer, I’ve found myself a bit disappointed with the initial release of Payday 3, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things pick up in the future. From what I gather, the developers, Starbreeze, are counting on collaboration events and partnerships with major platform holders to help boost sales. They’ve openly admitted that the game’s performance so far has fallen significantly below their expectations, as stated in their latest financial report.
Starbreeze used the example of releasing their title on PlayStation Plus as a strategy to expand their player base. They considered this move as a significant and valuable chance.
In their recent update, the studio mentioned that as of now, “Payday 3” is among the featured games for February on PlayStation Plus. This means that come February, any user with an active PlayStation Plus subscription can easily download and enjoy playing this game.
Working with PlayStation in 2025 will boost Payday’s earnings during the first quarter, but more importantly, it presents a fantastic chance for millions of players to test out Payday 3, which has been painstakingly refined over 1.5 years, enhancing its functionality and content.
Starbreeze is teaming up with collaborative projects for titles such as PUBG: Battlegrounds and Roblox, aiming to create Payday-like experiences within these games.
As a passionate gamer, I’ve noticed that this year, Starbreeze reported annual net sales of approximately $17.3 million, a significant drop from the $59.1 million they reported last year. Interestingly, Payday 3 was responsible for around $7.7 million of this revenue, which is considerably less compared to the $44.5 million it contributed last year. On the other hand, Payday 2 brought in roughly $3.9 million, a decrease from the $13 million it generated last year.
In summary, the decline in sales during the year amounted to approximately $18.5 million, or SEK 199.1 million, in losses.
In simpler terms, Mats Juhl, acting CEO of Starbreeze, stated that upcoming titles such as Payday and an internally developed Dungeons & Dragons game (codenamed Project Baxter) will contribute to a more prosperous year for the company. Additionally, he highlighted Starbreeze’s third-party publishing ventures as key drivers of growth in the coming year.
According to Juhl, we’ve been fortifying the Payday brand by partnering up and improving it, all while making fantastic strides in Project Baxter and laying a solid groundwork for our external publications.
Looking ahead to 2025 with an optimistic outlook, we’re poised for success due to our risk-balanced stance, robust cash reserves, and numerous projects nearing significant achievements. Our aspiration to emerge as a prominent multi-title studio is becoming increasingly attainable, and we are strategically situated to keep creating value for both our players and shareholders.
It’s worth noting that Starbreeze announced, as part of their Q4 2024 earnings report, their intention to boost player interaction with Payday 3, all while reducing financial commitments for this cooperative shooter game.
During the initial year after the release of ‘Payday 3’, investments were exceptionally high, encompassing DLCs and Operation Medic Bag. Looking forward to the second year, we have confidence in maintaining a steady flow of value for our players while investing less significantly.
