In the opening three months of 2025, global PC sales soared significantly, as reported by recent data from Canalys. An impressive 62.7 million devices were purchased during this period, representing a rise of 9.4% compared to the same quarter in the previous year.
The spike is spread out relatively evenly across notebooks (up 10% YoY) and desktops (up 8% YoY).
According to Canalys, some of the rise in PC sales is due to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) hastening sales before potential tariffs announced by the Trump administration. The ongoing trade war might lead to a significant increase in PC prices, so various manufacturers have offered discounts or employed other strategies to boost sales.
The end of Windows 10 support is also a major factor when it comes to PC sales.
Preemptive sales ahead of tariffs
Due to the continuous trade dispute, various sectors, such as computer manufacturing, are experiencing a high level of unpredictability. With the fluctuating announcement, pause, increase, and decrease of tariffs, PC producers have been compelled to implement significant adjustments in their strategies.
Razer temporarily halted all laptop sales within the U.S., while Framework was forced to suspend the sale of one of their laptop models to prevent continued losses on that particular product.
We’ve also seen the prices of devices go up, including the Legion Go S and MSI Claw.
Had some tariffs been implemented, the price of one particular model of the Razer Blade 18 laptop would exceed $12,000.
In just the past few days, exports of large quantities of rare earth metals crucial for technology have ceased from China, and NVIDIA has revealed a significant transition towards manufacturing AI supercomputers within the United States.
The upcoming tariffs drove PC manufacturers to sell more devices.
According to Ishan Dutt, the principal analyst at Canalys, there was a significant increase in PC shipments during the first quarter of 2025. This rise was primarily fueled by vendors hurriedly sending more computers to the United States ahead of expected tariff declarations.
Ahead of any possible price hikes, this forward-thinking approach enabled both manufacturers and distributors to accumulate inventory in advance. Consequently, it increased the quantity sold to retailers, even though consumer demand remained relatively constant,” Dutt explained.
The future direction of PC sales remains unclear until major concerns from the U.S. and China are addressed, after which we’ll observe how PC producers adapt to potential ongoing tariffs.
Windows 10 end of support
As a dedicated tech enthusiast, I’ve noticed a shift in PC market trends that can’t be ignored – the approaching sunset of Windows 10 support is seemingly influencing purchasing decisions. For years, Microsoft has been sounding the alarm about this end date, and it seems like their warnings are finally resonating with potential buyers.
After October 2025, Windows 10 PCs will stop receiving security updates and support. Since Windows 11 has specific prerequisites for an upgrade, many users may find themselves needing to buy a new computer or switch to another operating system as their current one becomes outdated.
Businesses are especially affected by the end of Windows 10 support.
According to a survey conducted by Canalys (now under Omdia) in March, which polled channel partners knowledgeable about SMB PC refresh strategies, it was found that 14% of these partners stated that their clients were unaware of the End of Support (EoS) for Windows 10, while an additional 21% indicated that their customers acknowledged the EoS but had no intention of upgrading, as reported by Dutt.
As a researcher studying this field, I’ve found that customers in certain circumstances may encounter a more expensive cost landscape when it’s time for them to update their computer fleets due to the delay in their initial planning process.
Given that computer prices might increase in the near future, both businesses and individual users might rush to acquire new hardware before supplies run out.
