As a movie critic who’s seen more comic book adaptations than I care to remember, I must say that my anticipation for Peacemaker season 2 is as high as John Cena’s peacemaker belt buckle! The first season was a delightful rollercoaster ride of zany comedy and action, and with James Gunn at the helm, I have no doubts that the second installment will be just as entertaining.
Fans of DC can now mark their calendars for the arrival of James Gunn’s Peacemaker Season 2, but keep in mind that it’s going to take some time before we get to see it.
The series unfolds post-2021’s The Suicide Squad, focusing on the gun-wielding mercenary portrayed by John Cena. This character is ready to wage war against virtually anyone or anything in pursuit of what he perceives as “peace”.
The initial episode was released way back in January 2022, receiving mostly favorable feedback from critics due to its humorous, unconventional style and talented ensemble cast. It’s been confirmed that the second season will be available on US streaming service Max starting in August 2025.
After the debut of the initial episodes, Gunn has ascended to the role of co-CEO at DC Studios (alongside Peter Safran), and is now supervising a revival of the struggling comic book series. Notably, Cena’s Peacemaker character survived the subsequent downsizing.
It’s been disclosed earlier that Season 2 of Peacemaker will unfold following the storyline of the upcoming summer’s Superman, featuring David Corenswet. Moreover, a character will make an appearance in both series.
In the upcoming movie and streaming series, Gunn has chosen Frank Grillo to portray Rick Flag Sr, who is the father of Joel Kinnaman’s character from Suicide Squad. This new version of Rick Flag Sr will make his debut in next month’s DC animated series titled Creature Commandos.
In an explanation through Entertainment Weekly, Gunn described the role as follows: “We delve into various aspects of this character, and he’s not one-dimensional. He isn’t solely good; in fact, he has many facets. This individual exhibits a range of moral complexities, making him a multifaceted human being.
I’ve known Grillo for quite some time now, and I’ve had a desire to collaborate with him for an extended period. Upon taking charge of the studio, one of the first individuals I reached out to was him, saying something like, ‘We’ll find a suitable project for you.’ Now, it seems as if he’s popped up all over the place.
Previously, Grillo made an appearance in the Marvel universe’s cinematic saga, portraying the antagonist Crossbones opposite Chris Evans’s Captain America character in both “The Winter Soldier” and “Civil War”.
Additionally hinting at what’s to come, Gunn unveiled a sneak peek of a new enigmatic character set to appear in Season 2 of Peacemaker. However, it remains undecided as to whom this character might represent specifically. Check out the first glimpse of them below.
