In August 2025, we can expect the return of “Peacemaker” in its second season. James Gunn has officially placed it within the DC Universe’s (DCU) continuity. With the upcoming “Superman” film by James Gunn garnering much attention due to its role as the initial chapter in the franchise’s grand narrative, “Peacemaker” season 2 will follow closely behind as the second live-action installment in this fresh DC Universe. The storyline for “Peacemaker” season 2, however, originates from the ending of its first season, which was set within the old DCEU. A key challenge for Gunn is to determine how this new entry seamlessly fits into the broader timeline.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn discussed the DC Universe’s overall timeline and where Peacemaker season 2 fits in. Gunn mentioned his efforts to steer clear of the mistakes made by previous franchises by stating that the timeline for Peacemaker season 2 is somewhat flexible: “After my time at Marvel, I understand how challenging it can be to make things fit perfectly together, so it’s [Peacemaker season 2] a few years from now, but not explicitly specified.” It’s encouraging to see Gunn applying lessons learned from his past work in the superhero genre, although this means that Peacemaker’s exact position within the DCU timeline is somewhat unclear.

Given Gunn’s statements, it seems logical that he would prefer to steer clear of the complexities in the MCU’s chronology. Initially, the MCU timeline was straightforward as each movie unfolded in the same year within the storyline. However, the five-year leap in Avengers: Endgame, the continuous Marvel Disney+ TV series, the recognition of old shows like Netflix’s The Defenders saga, and the multiversal elements of plots have introduced a lot of ambiguity. Marvel Studios even published a book aiming to clarify every aspect of the MCU timeline, yet at times, it has been inconsistent.

It appears that Gunn prefers to maintain an ambiguity regarding this expanding matter when it comes to DCU’s schedule, as suggested by his evasive response about Peacemaker season 2. In doing so, he ensures that both the viewers and storytellers won’t have to grapple with synchronizing stories within a fictional timeframe.

Our Take On Peacemaker Season 2 & The DCU

Gunn’s Vagueness Makes Sense, But Raises Other Issues

It seems to me that it might be wiser for Gunn to concentrate more on the narrative itself rather than getting entangled in the sequencing issues. To put it another way, Peacemaker season 2 is facing some challenges with its timeline, considering that season 1 was a part of the DCEU and featured appearances from Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra Miller as The Flash. However, these characters do not yet have their new counterparts in the current DC Universe.

The second season of “Peacemaker” seems out of step with the DC Universe due to its unclear timeline and blend of canonical and non-canonical elements, which could potentially cause confusion. However, it’s not crucial to understand the exact time gap between seasons 1 and 2 or even between season 2 and “Superman”. It would be ideal if “Peacemaker” season 2 clarifies this, but if not, we can appreciate that we don’t need to worry too much about pinpointing the specific duration elapsed since season 1.
