Pedro Pascal has played several well-known characters in popular franchises, but he finds Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, to be the most daunting role yet. He joined ‘Game of Thrones’ as beloved character Oberyn Martell when it was already successful, carried the expectations of Boba Fett fans everywhere during the debut of ‘The Mandalorian’, and became the player-character in the HBO adaptation of ‘The Last of Us’. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pascal admitted that each role was increasingly challenging, but none compared to the intimidation he felt for the Marvel Comics legend. However, he believes he found a good balance between meeting fan expectations and staying true to himself in this role.
Pascal shared that his casting in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” was quite daunting. He leaned on those around him to keep him grounded and aid him in overcoming it. He mentioned that transitioning from “Game of Thrones”, early days of Netflix’s “Narcos”, the legendary “Star Wars”, and the realm of video games with “The Last of Us” was intimidating each time, as he felt he wouldn’t be able to surpass how daunting the previous experience was.
He continued, “They’re all intimidating due to the desire to bring joy to people, particularly when it involves something well-known with high expectations. After all, you want those expectations to be fulfilled. Additionally, you aim to stay true to yourself so that the story can be as engaging and immersive as possible for anyone who wants to join us on this journey into this world.
It’s quite remarkable to pause and consider Pascal’s acting journey so far, given that most of his major roles have been in well-established series. Interestingly, his IMDb profile lists “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” under the category of his most recognized works. Somehow, Pascal has perfected the skill of seamlessly fitting into these familiar, ongoing narratives as if he’s always been a part of them, and he truly feels at home there.
In “First Steps,” the task becomes slightly less challenging since it doesn’t adhere to the main storyline of Earth-616 in the MCU. Instead, it’s situated in a different timeline, part of the franchise’s ever-growing multiverse. The atmosphere, reminiscent of the 1960s with a twist of futurism, provides an ideal backdrop for the introduction of Marvel’s original family. However, this setting also leaves us pondering how these characters might eventually merge into a broader narrative.
From his past achievements, it seems that Pascal would be an ideal candidate to handle this transformation effectively. The movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to premiere in theaters on July 25th, 2025.
