‘People Are Less Willing to Pay’: Dev Speaks Out Against Day One Releases on PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass

Initially, the title “Revenge of the Savage Planet” was made available on Xbox Game Pass on its first day; however, the game’s creator, Raccoon Logic’s CEO Alex Hutchinson, advises developers against relying on such deals.

In a conversation with Gamer Social Club, he openly acknowledged that the game’s sales have been satisfactory; however, the majority of its activity is being driven by Microsoft’s subscription service. He expressed concern that if the trend of day one releases continues, it could potentially undermine the overall value of the gaming industry as a whole.

Instead, Hutchinson explained that his studio entered into a partnership with Microsoft, anticipating that additional visibility would boost downloadable content (DLC) sales. However, this has not materialized as expected.

He acknowledged that so far, we haven’t come across such a situation. But what we have observed is a trend where content seems undervalued, and there’s a decreasing willingness among people to pay for things. This could potentially lead to fewer games being produced in the future and an increase in studios facing closure.

As a passionate advocate for change, I’ve found myself putting forth an argument that might seem a bit paradoxical: the gaming industry should unite to release games exclusively on subscription services a year after their initial launch. I draw a comparison with the world of cinema, where films make their debut in theaters before they become available on DVD or streaming platforms.

As a gamer, I’ve got to mention something interesting: When my game was added to Xbox Game Pass, Raccoon Logic received an upfront payment. However, it seems like Hutchinson hinted that those payments aren’t as substantial as they used to be.

Sony, of course, has always been reluctant to release its games into PS Plus.

Initially, the company faced immense competition to mimic Microsoft’s business approach, yet they remained firm in their belief that such a change would be unsustainable. They stood by their convictions instead.

Although Xbox continues to launch its exclusive games simultaneously on Xbox Game Pass, it’s also evolving into a third-party game publisher, making nearly its entire library available on PlayStation 5, with several titles debuting on the platform from day one.

Currently, there’s been no recent update from Microsoft regarding the total number of their subscription service members in the U.S., as reports indicate a period of stagnation in this area.
