People Can Fly Cancels Two Unannounced Projects, Scaling Down Teams

Following the layoffs in January concerning Project Gemini, a game yet to be revealed from Square Enix, it has now been officially disclosed that People Can Fly has terminated work on this project. Additionally, another secret VR project known as Project Bifrost has also been put on hold.

Concerning the previous statement, CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski mentioned that Square Enix had not shared a proposed “addendum to the Publishing Agreement for future milestones related to Project Gemini,” and there has been no communication from the Publisher about their intention to either continue or end the Gemini project.

Due to this issue, Project Bifrost was impacted, as Wojciechowski points out that the group’s cash flow indicated a shortage of opportunities for acquiring the resources and finances needed to continue working on and releasing this project. Consequently, People Can Fly needs to reorganize substantially as a studio and reduce their team sizes.

Wojciechowski conveyed heartfelt apologies and sorrow over the course of events, along with profound gratitude for everyone’s efforts so far. Previously, the studio collaborated with Square Enix on a sci-fi third-person looter shooter game titled Outriders, which is playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.

Approximately 3.5 million gamers were reported playing the game just two months post-launch, with the publisher hailing it as their “next big venture.” Yet, developer People Can Fly disclosed that the game didn’t yield a profit approximately one year later, meaning no royalties were earned.

People like those at People Can Fly are currently working on additional projects. For instance, they’re collaborating with The Coalition on “Gears of War: E-Day,” and they’ve also got something secret in the pipeline for Sony, which is based on one of their iconic PlayStation intellectual properties.
