Supporters of “Persona 4” might find themselves disappointed with the latest news about a possible remake. The actor who played the charming sidekick Yosuke Hanamura, Yuri Lowenthal, announced on BlueSky that he won’t be reprising his role for the unconfirmed “Persona 4 Remake“, despite his repeated attempts to contact Atlus. Similarly, both Erin Fitzgerald, who played the martial arts enthusiast Chie Satonata, and Amanda Winn-Lee, who voices the reserved heiress Yukiki Amagi, have also confirmed they won’t be part of the game. While some are still excited about the potential release of the game, given last year’s rumors, it seems that the remake of this cherished RPG may incorporate an aspect from “Persona 3 Reload” that wasn’t well-received by many prior to its launch.
Originally launched in 2008 for PlayStation 2, Persona 4 built upon the turn-based battle system of its predecessor, Persona 3, by allowing players to control their own party members during combat. Set in the tranquil yet eerie town of Inaba, where a series of mysterious murders and enveloping fog have cast a dark pallor, you assume the role of the protagonist as you join forces with fellow students to unravel the murder mysteries and prevent further tragedies. This is accomplished through the enigmatic Midnight Channel, which can be accessed via television. The game garnered widespread acclaim for its compelling narrative and gameplay mechanics, but it was particularly lauded for its memorable cast of characters, many of whom were voiced by renowned actors who continue to enjoy immense popularity today. However, the recent confirmation of Yuri’s departure from the series may signal a change in the voice acting lineup.
Persona 4 Remake Will Likely Recast Every Character Like Persona 3 Reload Did
It appears that in the upcoming remake of Persona 4, all major characters will be played by new voice actors, replacing the original cast from the 2008 version. This means that well-known voices like Johnny Yong Bosch (Bleach), Laura Bailey (The Last of Us Part II), Troy Baker (The Last of Us), and Yuri Lowenthal (Marvel’s Spider-Man 2) will not be returning to their roles. This strategy was also used in the Persona 3 Reload, where all cast members were replaced with newer voices such as Aleks Le (Solo Leveling) and Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia)).
Regarding that topic, the response to the English re-dubbing of “Reload” was rather understated at first, considering several actors from the industry were already involved and could handle their respective roles. Nevertheless, as the game progressed, the criticisms seemed to fade away since the new voice actors delivered unexpectedly well in their roles, particularly Zeno Robinson as Junpei and Dawn M. Bennett as Aegis. Although their performances might seem like close imitations of the original cast, it did provide opportunities for fresh talents such as Justine Lee (as Ken’s character) and Justice Slocum (as Shinji’s character) to shine.
Regrettably, enthusiasts of the game Persona 4 may have to adapt to some changes in voice acting, as several main actors didn’t reprise their roles after the initial and Golden versions. For instance, Laura Bailey and Troy Baker were not part of the cast for Persona 4: Dancing All Night, with Ashly Burch (Horizon Zero Dawn) and Matthew Mercer (Persona 5) stepping in as Rise and Kanji instead. Although it’s a tad melancholic that the original cast won’t reunite for the Persona 4 Remake, this opens up opportunities for fresh or seasoned voice actors to bring these beloved characters to life for a new audience.
It hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but there are whispers suggesting that the remake of “Persona 4” might be unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase, which will stream live on June 8th at 10 am Pacific Time / 1 pm Eastern Time.
