Peter Capaldi, Cush Jumbo return as Criminal Record renewed for season 2

As a seasoned critic who has seen more than a few crime dramas in my time, I must say that the renewal of Criminal Record for a second season is truly exciting news. Having followed the careers of both Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, it’s fascinating to witness their on-screen chemistry unfold in this gripping thriller.

Following an impressive run earlier this year that garnered praise from both audiences and critics, the Apple TV+ suspense series starring Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, titled “Criminal Record,” has now been given the green light for a second season.

In the initial series, Detective Sergeant June Lenker portrayed by Jumbo clashed with DCI Daniel Hegarty played by Capaldi. The conflict stemmed from an investigation into a possible miscarriage of justice within one of Hegarty’s murder cases.

In the official summary for season 2, it’s stated that Lenker will be portrayed as the top officer responding to a scenario where a political gathering is disrupted by opponents from the extreme right.

The summary goes on: “Following the brutal confrontation, a young man tragically loses his life, and June, overwhelmed by remorse, becomes determined to unmask the hidden culprit and see them brought to account.”

It appears that her greatest chance lies with Daniel Hegarty, who has become a crucial player in the secretive realm of police intelligence. She might find the solutions she seeks through him, but to secure his aid, she’ll need to agree to a risky deal.

In an exhilarating turn of events for enthusiasts like myself, I shared the thrilling news back in February that a second season was indeed underway for this captivating series.

Initially, upon the debut of the first season, Capaldi expressed about a potential second season: “Who knows? We’re thrilled that we’ve managed to pull it off and it’s now available for all to see. It’s been an incredible journey getting it ready for the screen. Working with Apple has been wonderful, but it’s a whole new experience.”

When I was involved with projects at the BBC and ITV, a show could be purchased by countries like Australia or Hong Kong. However, with Apple, they can simply click a button and 130 countries worldwide immediately receive the show. It’s an entirely new playing field for me.

“But I’m delighted, at my age, to still be part of it.”

Capaldi gained prominence through his performances in Doctor Who and The Thick of It, and it’s officially announced that the suspenseful series he stars in on Prime Video, titled The Devil’s Hour, is set to air its second season come fall.

Jumbo has gained recognition through her appearances in shows like Torchwood, where she worked alongside Capaldi, as well as Vera, The Good Wife, and its spin-off, The Good Fight.
