This April, we’ll witness the fusion of science fiction realms as both Black Mirror and Doctor Who return to our TV sets, and an actor will even leap between these two shows!
Indeed, it’s true! Peter Capaldi, who played the 12th Doctor on Doctor Who, is set to appear in Black Mirror. He will make his first appearance in episode 4 of season 7, titled “Plaything”. Lewis Gribben and returning stars from the “Bandersnatch” episodes, Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry, will also be part of this intriguing production.
Despite the diverse array of returning characters, each episode of Black Mirror, including Plaything, is self-contained and unique, making it a challenging task for viewers to rank them as they strive to compare these wildly different installments. As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate each new story, knowing that the series will continue to surprise and captivate me with its thought-provoking narratives.
Ahead of the upcoming season, Capaldi was queried about his preferred episode from the science fiction series personally, and his response was quite unexpected.
Capaldi expressed his preference for several options, but if he had to pick one, it would be “The Waldo Moment,” a comedic scenario where a cartoon character runs in a by-election and debates with other candidates. While it was intended for humor, it foreshadowed the increasing influence of comedy in politics.
Currently, instead of intelligent individuals or well-thought-out strategies, we encounter more cartoonish figures, so to speak. It seems we have these caricatured populists, rather than those with a clear understanding of the future and a roadmap to reach it.

As a devoted fan, I’d say that in the third episode of season 2, I found myself immersed in the storyline where Daniel Rigby brilliantly brought to life a charismatic actor embodying Waldo, a beloved satirical cartoon figure. This time, instead of entertaining audiences with his witty humor, Waldo took a surprising turn and ran for Member of Parliament (MP) on a platform that was populist, anarchistic, and nihilistic in nature.
Indeed, Charlie Brooker, the mastermind behind the series, has admitted that if given a chance, he would rework one specific episode due to feeling that the level of importance or consequence wasn’t properly conveyed. He expressed this sentiment to Vulture in 2016, stating that “the significance wasn’t balanced correctly”.
In more recent periods, it’s been seen in a new light by many observers, who label it as remarkably insightful about contemporary politics.
Absolutely, Capaldi gained recognition by taking on the lead character in a comedy that satirizes politics, portraying Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It.
In January 2024, Capaldi expressed his reluctance towards reprising his role in the show, stating that current global politics are “far more serious than a jest” and that humorizing such matters somehow diminishes the gravity of the issues at hand.
He went on to say, “I believe these issues run deep. It’s clear we’re grappling with a climate predicament, a political climate where trust is scarce, and it appears there’s an alarming degree of questionable practices happening.
