Peter Cushing ‘resurrected’ for new Hammer Horror documentary using deepfake AI

As a long-time connoisseur of the silver screen and a fervent admirer of the gothic horror genre, I must say that the upcoming documentary, Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters, has piqued my interest immensely. The prospect of virtually resurrecting the legendary Peter Cushing through artificial intelligence technology is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Legendary screen star Peter Cushing will be digitally resurrected using advanced AI technology for an upcoming documentary that delves into the influence and enduring legacy of the Hammer horror film series.

In 1994, the actor was known as a symbol for the British film studio due to his involvement in 22 of their productions, which included six movies based on Frankenstein and five films about Dracula.

Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters honors the 90th anniversary of the studio, taking viewers on a journey from its early days as a small operation working out of a simple backroom to becoming an influential powerhouse in the realm of British cinema.

In simpler terms, Ben Field, who leads Deep Fusion, emphasized through Deadline that since Cushing was instrumental in Hammer’s achievements, his inclusion is essential for an accurate portrayal of the story.

His collaborations with Christopher Lee significantly contributed to the formation and enduring reputation of Hammer Films.

His inclusion ensures that the project reflects his lasting influence on the studio and its audience. It bridges the gap between our past admiration for him and our present endeavors.

Field confirmed that they have obtained approval from all required entities to move forward with their project.

In the anthology series titled “Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters,” renowned horror masters like Tim Burton, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, and John Logan will make their appearance, along with paying tribute to the illustrious work of longtime Hammer Studios stalwart Christopher Lee.

The film premieres on Sky Arts at 9pm on Thursday 31st October 2024, to tie in with Halloween.

Earlier this week, Deep Fusion grabbed attention with its unveiling of a podcast series consisting of eight episodes, featuring an artificial intelligence replica of the late broadcasting legend, Michael Parkinson, as the host.

The ongoing project, backed by the Parkinson’s family and estate, is being developed with some exciting guests already confirmed, and several more positions yet to be filled according to producer Jamie Anderson, hinting at notable figures involved.

Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters airs on Sky Arts on Halloween.
