As a lifelong Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan and someone who grew up with Master Splinter’s wise words guiding me through countless adventures, I am truly saddened by the news of Peter Renaday’s passing. His voice brought the wisdom and strength of this iconic character to life, and his contributions to the world of animation will be felt for generations to come.
As a devoted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, I’m deeply saddened to share the news that one of our cherished cast members, Peter Renaday, who brought Master Splinter to life, has passed away at the age of 89. We will remember his incredible contributions and the magic he brought to our favorite animated series.
If you’re familiar with Renaday, there’s no doubt you recognize his distinctive voice. His acting career started in television and movies back in 1961, but it wasn’t until the 80s that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project came about. Renaday was chosen to voice Hamato Yoshi, also known as Splinter, in the initial animated series, a role he played from 1987 to 1996. He reprised this role for various other projects later on. Today, Townsend Coleman, the original Michelangelo voice actor, shared memories of Renaday following the news of his passing. You can find his message below:
friends, it’s with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of our beloved teacher, Peter Renaday. Pete was an exceptionally genuine individual who embodied the essence of kindness and humility. His loss will be deeply felt. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him just a month ago and he remained as warm, welcoming, and inspiring as ever.

Absolutely, it turns out that Renaday wasn’t just the voice behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; he also lent his voice to several other projects. He was a key player in Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, Transformers, and many other popular ’90s animated series, including Superman: The Animated Series and Animaniacs. In essence, Renaday’s voice could be heard in nearly every major animated series from that era. He even voiced characters in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien and Assassin’s Creed Revelations before retiring from animation voice acting in 2011.
Renaday’s work significantly contributed to the evolution of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a popular group of turtles. These unique characters first appeared in comics created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Later, Fred Wolf Films picked up the franchise for an animated series, which premiered in 1987 as a special episode. As the ’90s approached, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had become a nationwide sensation. Renaday’s skill brought Master Splinter to life for countless children, many of whom continue to cherish their affection for TMNT. Interestingly, the IP remains relevant today, with Nickelodeon launching a new era titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Our thoughts are with Renaday’s loved ones during this difficult time.
