EastEnders recently broadcast a moving episode focusing on Phil Mitchell’s (played by Steve McFadden) struggle with depression after his suicide attempt in February.
For the past several weeks, Phil has been staying at a psychiatric facility. Recently, the BBC soap opera transported us back to the beginning of his hospital stay, depicting Phil causing chaos in his room. As chaos ensued, a care worker named Yasmin (played by Natasha Patel) intervened to help calm him down.
It became apparent that Phil held strong, ingrained views about men not showing vulnerability, as he referred to other patients in a derogatory manner, labeling them as peculiar or eccentric.
He requested the physician to provide him with a potent medication. However, Phil eventually realized that just pills wouldn’t suffice for his recovery; he needed to learn how to express himself openly as well.
Phil wasn’t really up for running into Keith Allen (Gaz), as he first appeared to be a casual, funny guy.
Over time, however, Phil developed a bond with Gaz and shared his long-standing affection for former wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean).

When it became clear that Gaz was departing from our team, moving into an old, moldy apartment, and having no surviving family members, the situation grew quite troubling.
Unbeknownst to Phil, the can of beer he gave to Gaz could potentially be used for self-harm.
It turned out that the beer Phil handed to Gaz might have been something dangerous for him to use. Phil didn’t realize this at the time.
It’s a relief that Phil understood Gaz’s plan and triggered an alarm, giving enough time to save the man’s life. However, Phil was furious with Yasmin because no one at the hospital foresaw this event happening.
For the first time, Yasmin became flustered, and Phil attempted to make amends by preparing a slice of toast for her, along with admitting that he had handed the can over to Gaz.
Initially, Phil needed a reminder, yet this instance served as a significant shift. He confessed to Yasmin that he’d been avoiding his loved ones, fearing they might witness his vulnerability.
As he rounded the bend, Phil ultimately chose to take a long-overdue shower following numerous suggestions, and in a subsequent gathering several weeks hence, his car repair expertise served as an analogy for his mental wellness.
Suppose you had a very heavy car part with you. What would you do in that situation?” was the question posed to him.
“I’d put it down,” said Phil.
Afterward, Gaz expressed his anger towards Phil, yet Phil was thoughtful while Yasmin guided him to understand that he was prepared for release.
As Phil put it, “I’ve got a few more tools in my garage!”
Currently, Yasmin shared with Billy, Lexi, Nigel, and Linda the possible location of Phil. It turned out that he was spotted near Eric’s grave.
As a movie buff putting it personally, I told Dad that I’m done carrying around that negative vibe anymore. I made it clear that I don’t wish to follow in the footsteps of Eric and his toxic ways.
Reunited with Lexi and co, Phil told Nigel that they would help each other.
Looking ahead, McFadden’s heartfelt performance served as a poignant finale to the moving narrative that touched Phil deeply.
