In the revamped Marvel universe, the character known as “Ultimate Wolverine” is playing a crucial role in expanding and defining the mutant aspect of the new Ultimate Universe. While “Ultimate X-Men” is carving its own path, introducing fresh mutants derived from original characters and taking on a darker, horror comic book style, “Ultimate Wolverine” is following a more conventional route by presenting versions of various X-Men from the Ultimate universe. The fourth issue of “Ultimate Wolverine” is reminiscent of the “Weapon X” storyline, where Wolverine escapes Russian control. However, the Eurasian Republic has a different tactic for keeping tabs on Wolverine – they are using two exceptionally powerful telepaths: the disembodied mind of Charles Xavier and Jean Grey, who is labeled as “Phoenix” by the Eurasians. This development poses a significant challenge for the heroes in the new Ultimate Universe, as their adversaries now possess an extremely potent version of Jean Grey.
In simple terms, anyone well-versed in X-Men lore recognizes the immense importance and power wielded by the Phoenix Force. The “Dark Phoenix Saga” is Marvel’s most significant tale, and throughout the X-Men’s timeline, the Phoenix has left an indelible mark. When Jean Grey is infused with the Phoenix Force, she can exhibit behavior that veers between good and evil, making it crucial to study the history of the Phoenix Force to predict its future actions within the Ultimate Universe.
The Phoenix Force Is Fire and Rebirth Personified
In the comic book series “Uncanny X-Men” (Volume 1), issue #101 marked the debut of the Phoenix Force. The X-Men found themselves fleeing from a Sentinel space base, and it was necessary for someone to pilot the unprotected cockpit of the shuttle. Jean Grey took on this selfless role, choosing to sacrifice herself. However, the Phoenix Force intervened, enabling her survival. Throughout her life, Jean had an intrinsic connection with the Phoenix Force, a link that was revealed later in the storyline. The Phoenix Force eventually supplanted Jean, taking her place. Under the strain of superhero life, the fusion of the Phoenix Force became malevolent, giving birth to the Dark Phoenix. Over time, the relationship between Jean and the Phoenix Force has evolved considerably. Initially, it was believed that Jean herself was the Phoenix, but Marvel later resurrected her. Since she had committed genocide as the Phoenix, they felt compelled to absolve her of this crime. Thus, Jean was never truly the Phoenix. This connection has been revised multiple times over the years, with the intention of deepening the bond between Jean and the Phoenix Force. Even a longtime fan like myself is left uncertain about their relationship in the time leading up to “The Dark Phoenix Saga”.
Over time, Marvel Comics has seen numerous characters who have hosted the Phoenix Force, one of the cosmic powers symbolizing death, fire, and renewal. Among them are Rachel Summers, a reality-altering offspring of Jean Grey and Cyclops; Quentin Quire, an Avenger with Echo as his alias; the Phoenix Five comprising Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus, and Magik; Hope Summers; and many others. Marvel hinted at the possibility that Thor’s mother might have been the Phoenix Force, but they eventually chose a different path. Jean Grey stands out as an exceptional host of the Phoenix, managing to resist its allure and employ its power for good. The Phoenix Force played a pivotal role in defeating Essex, who had evolved into a deity-like Dominion – the genetic father of Mister Sinister. Following this, Jean has ventured into space, using her abilities to combat the most formidable threats lurking in the cosmos.
The Phoenix Force Could Spell Doom for the Mutant Rebels
In issue #4 of Ultimate Wolverine, the story initially feels like a replica of “Weapon X” before it takes an unexpected turn at its conclusion. A significant twist involving Charles Xavier and Jean Grey sets the stage for changes within the Ultimate Universe. To maintain control over them, the Eurasians have an intricate system in place: they’ve removed Xavier’s brain from his fragile body and sustain it using machinery. As for Jean, they keep her in a comatose state, barely nourishing her to ensure she remains malleable. These actions could lead to significant consequences.
The Phoenix Power greatly responds to the feelings of its host. Manipulating Jean into a vulnerable state by the Eurasians won’t bring them joy, and when she resurfaces, it might cause significant trouble for all involved. Moreover, the Eurasian Republic is governed by Colossus and Magik, past hosts of the Phoenix in the mainstream universe. Will they attempt to seize control of the power? Could Jean become the Dark Phoenix? The emergence of the Phoenix Power marks a significant turning point in the Ultimate Universe, potentially leading to extremely alarming consequences.
